Not a "cow on ice" anymore

I've been wondering about this, and it certainly has to be asked after today's splendid result... why is Maria so good on clay now? It's almost becoming her best surface! One of the main things that intrigues me about this is that this rise to success on clay has happened post-injury. Is there any correlation with that? Discuss.

Re: Not a "cow on ice" anymore

The kick and slice on serve, weight of shot which keeps lower than other players', and a shot that aggressive grinder cannot do much with.

There were a few points today Masha won just by redirecting the ball into the corner with mammoth spin, Vika could hardly reach them.

I just hope she can carry/ improve this form onwards the RG...she needs to be wise with her scheduling and match play and makes sure she peaks at the right moment at RG...i hope she does

Re: Not a "cow on ice" anymore

She actually learnt to slide on clay, what she was simply not used to do pre surgery. It allows her to be much better at defense than on hard and in plus, she's got the shots to go from defense to attack and that's why she's so effective on clay nowadays.

That's why I want to play on a clay court sometime... just so I can slide.

Re: Not a "cow on ice" anymore

She improved a lot, but she is still not moving on clay as clay specialists, still foreign on clay. It reminds me of Nadal playing on hard-courts, he wins matches and even won US open but you still feel this is not his favorite surface. As long as she doesn't face clay specialists (which in case of WTA they are very few) she can win more, because she fights and rarely gives up which is very important on clay. But I don't have the feel she can win Roland Garros. It's very hard! It will literally be a miracle.

Re: Not a "cow on ice" anymore

I have the same feeling too but honestly its the feeling I have now for any other slam she is going to face

clay now is just one other surface, where she can have some problems into moving
but then there is grass with her problems to balance between risky shots and percent of errors
and then we have hard courts and her footwork that is not comparable to some other specialists, and we have wind too, very bothering in some of the tourneys played out there

the thing is that this is a new Maria, more fierce, stronger, but less invincible at her peak

Re: Not a "cow on ice" anymore

Maria improved on all surfaces and is more mature. Her problem is that most players now know what is needed to beat her. She needs new tactics, you can't depend on fighting spirit only to win slams. She needs to have consistent good serve.

Re: Not a "cow on ice" anymore

I posted a theory, or speculation or whatever, which no one said I am right or wrong. I think her physical condition is spectacularly strong...especially in the area of endurance...I don't know if she is doing anything differently in that area, but in spite of her frequent references to good food, she looks as thin as I can remember for a long time.

I'm not sure how you can say that... honestly, I think this will be the best chance she's ever had to finally complete her career Grand Slam. She most certainly can do it.

Trust me its not that much of fun Especially if you are playing a grinder/pusher it gets you REAL frustrated.(that is if you are an aggressive player. )

It's not that easy. She needs good serve first. She's still struggling with her serve.

That's why I still don't understand how can Nadal play consistently that good and move that way on clay I don't get it? How is that even possible?

Struggling with her serve?

Did you see any of her matches at Stuttgart?
