Happens very often actually. Working out in the morning before work isn't a terrible idea.

I live in Astoria and I play in Astoria Park where there are 14 courts, but you need the Tennis Permit from the parks department to play there which costs $200 dollars for a season between April-November.

Good for you, if true.

When you think about it, $200 is really not a lot of money for most people, though it may be for some. As long as you get a court/get to play, it seems like a good investment. But I know, not everybody does.

If the thread starter in Greenpoint drives, he or she can just go up the BQE for 10-15 min to Astoria. I'm sure there's a bus (or even the N or R subway, with or with out the bus) that goes there as well? Of course, that way will take longer. But they should check it out/look into it.

I thought McCarren Park in Williamsburg/Greenpoint, was getting tennis courts in the future, along with their recently refurbished pool?

They redid like three of the courts haha, not all of them, but most are in good shape and don't need anything done, a couple nets to be fixed and maybe a few cracks.

Well the N or Q train goes to Astoria BLVD. but you have to walk a distance for the courts.

Well it used to be $100 then last year they raised it to $200. It is sorta crazy haha, but I mean what can you do. We even wrote letters to our councilman and he didn't do anything.

November is pushing it but people still go out and play, I see people playing when its 40 degrees.

200 doesn't seem that bad to me as long as you get it right at the beginning of the season. I guess I'll use McCarren and see how it goes!

Haha the Greeks aren't too bad. I mean they are mostly at the cafe's and stuff which are fine, I love going to the cafe's.

But when Greece wins a soccer match or something that was important forget it. People go nuts!

I used to live in Greenpoint--as long as you're not going at peak hours (weekends or after 5:00pm during the week), you should be able to walk on to a court at McCarren Park anytime you want. The courts are pretty nice and certainly better than any other park in Brooklyn. They were resurfaced two years ago and are identical to the kind used at the US Open.

Unfortunately, playing tennis in NYC is a pain in the ass no matter how you slice it. I'm moving back there next week after having spent the last year in Portland, OR, and got completely spoiled by how cheap it is to play tennis. Indoor courts are $10-14 per person/hour, depending on when you went. And more often than not, nobody would take the court at the end of your session and you could just stay on.
