Northumberland Championships, Newcastle, England

Attempts made in the early 1880s to create a large annual tournament in the country of Northumberland, in north-east England, eventually resulted in the establishment of what became known as the Northumberland Championships. This tournament was held on grass courts during the summer, in Newcastle, a coastal town.

The Northumberland Championships survived for almost a century, mainly through the tournament's ability to attract a number of top players, albeit mainly British ones, on a consistent basis. It survived the coming of open tennis by fifteen years, more than many other old tournaments with a great tradition.

Re: Official Tournament Winners by Event

By 1924, there were two Le Touquet tournaments, and in 1924 they were held in consecutive weeks. There was no Le Touquet tournament either in 1910 or 1914.

The Englishwoman Lavinia Radeglia won the singles title in Le Touquet in 1911.

Essex Championships, England

Up until 1914, this tournament was held in Colchester; from 1920 until at least 1936, it was held in Westgate-on-Sea. By 1969, it was being held in Friton-on-Sea.
Hi Mark-that should read "Frinton-on-Sea".

The B Randall from 1983 is Bernadette Randall-she was world #1 junior that year.

Budleigh Salterton, Devon, England

Held in the late summer in the town of Budleigh Salterton in south-west England, this small but popular tournament formed part of the Devon circuit of tournaments for several decades. In later years it tended to clash with the holding of the United States Championships. The Budleigh Salterton tournament survived the coming of open tennis by five years.

Thanks Mark, I have added.
But in 1898 we have a result in our yearly thread: final not played due to rain, and Charlotte Cooper and Blanche Bingley Hillyard divided the prizes.
Also the men's singles final and the mixed final were not played.

From 1922 to '28 under "Tournaments of incertain denomination" , 1930 and '31 under "Nice Lawn Tennis Club Champs." , 1934 and '35 under "Nice Championships".
Except the "South of France Championships" (hard to fix themselves!), the other tournaments held in Nice are difficult to denominate, because often they had not a name and the newspapers named them as first meeting, second meeting, and the same denominations "Nice Lawn Tennis Club Champs." and "Nice Championships" are uncertain, they seem headlines of newspapers only.

Surrey Championships, Surbiton, England

In the early 1890s, there were attempts to create a popular, enduring tournament in Surrey, a county located in south-east England. This led to the establishment of a tournament held in Richmond which, although relatively popular, did not endure.

However, the Surbiton tournament, which first took place in 1900, was to become one of the most popular and enduring tournaments in the British lawn tennis calendar. This latter tournament was initially held around mid-June, but was moved to an earlier date, around late May, in 1904. It thus became the main season-opener on grass in Great Britain, a position it held for many years. The tournament's formal title was the Surrey Championships. It survived the dawn of open tennis for fifteen years or so, and was last held in 1983, at a new venue in Cranleigh.
