Re: Official Tournament Winners by Event

Some information on two early South African players, who were in fact mother and daughter, and had a lot of success at the South African Championships:

Norah Hickman won the singles title at the South African Championships in 1897, 1898 and 1899. At some point in the early 1900s she married a Roland Miller, and was runner-up at the same tournament in 1907 as Norah Hickman Miller.
--

In 1906, Norah Hickman Miller had given birth to a daughter, Winifred Norah Miller, who in turn was runner-up in the singles event at the South African Championships five times, twice under her maiden (1929 and 1931) and three times under married name, which was Winifred Miller Lowe (1932, 1933 and 1934). Winifred had earlier married a Frederick Hardwicke Lowe.

Re: Official Tournament Winners by Event

Canadian Championships/Canadian Open/Rogers Cup

The first Canadian Championships tournament was held in 1881, when the main event was a men's singles open to both Canadian and overseas players. In 1890, the Canadian Lawn Tennis Association was founded and from this year onwards the Canadian Championships have officially been held under the auspices of this association. This tournament is usually held in late July or early August.

A women's singles event open to both Canadian and overseas players was first held at the Canadian Championships in 1892; a Challenge Cup was first presented for this event in 1893. This meant that, for several years, the holder did not have to play through. An asterisk (*) after the result indicates that the holder did not defend her title in the year in question. In the early years the final match in the women's singles event was sometimes played on a best-of-five-sets basis.

Up until 1980, the Canadian Championships tournament as a whole was played in various venues and on various surfaces. The latter are unclear in a number of cases, although the surface at Niagara-on-the-Lake was grass, while the surface used when the tournament was held in Toronto was, up until 1980, clay. Since 1980, the surface has been of a hard (concrete) type.

Since 1981, the tournament has been held alternately in Toronto and Montreal, with separate tournaments featuring the men's and women's events, which are no longer held at the same time.

Niagara-on-the-Lake International, Canada

The Niagara-on-the-Lake International tournament was first held in 1885 and, in several years, managed to attract a number of the top American players. Indeed, it is clear from the records that the top American players tended to prefer this tournament, which was usually held in mid- to late August, over the open Canadian Championships.

In the early years the women's singles final at this tournament was played over the best of five sets several times.

The Niagara-on-the-Lake International tournament was held on grass courts. It continued on for a number of years after World War One.

Re: Official Tournament Winners by Event

A note on the Hampshire Championships/Bournemouth tournament: According to "Ayres' Lawn Tennis Almanack", there was no women's singles event at this tournament in 1897 and 1898, although there was a men's singles event.

In 1900, the tournament as a whole was not held. In 1899, Ruth Pennington-Legh Winch won the women's singles title. In 1905, Violet Pinckney won the same title.
