Yvonne Prévost
France
Born circa 1880
Died
Married Auguste Boppe, 11 May 1905

I'm now almost convinced that there was never any Hélène Prévost, only an Yvonne. Of course, there could have been two tennis-playing Prévost sisters. But it is difficult to prove. However, the above details are facts (I'm not sure of Yvonne's exact birthdate).

Sources: "Le Figaro", "Lawn Tennis and Croquet"

As for Yvonne Prevost, that information on her is accurate. I doubt now that there was a Helene Prevost. But it's very difficult to prove when sources almost never provide a first name. That said, I've seen Yvonne Prevost's name in some reliable contemporary sources, such as "Le Figaro" and "Lawn Tennis and Croquet", but never Helene Prevost.

I see-so unless there is some contemporary source listing her as "Helene" what we have is a misidentification. I'll have to go back and check the rare mentions around the 1900 Olympics. They probably all called her Miss (or Mlle) Prevost!
--

Orignally posted by newmark401:

Yes, and the tournament in question was called the "Tournoi de l'Exposition' and was held during the 'Exposition Universelle'/'World Fair' in Paris in 1900. Only in retrospect was that tournament given Olympic status (it featured a men's singles event for professional players!).
--

Update: There is concrete evidence that Hélène Prévost and Yvonne Prévost were two different people. Hélène was the daughter of André Prévost, who played some lawn tennis himself.

No luck on the Ostheimer-Adams connection Jimbo. Can you tell me where you found a mention of this?

There were at least 4 tennis playing Ostheimer sisters.

1. Elizabeth (or EG) Ostheimer-from 1906 until 1918 as Miss EG Ostheimer.

2. Gertrude Ostheimer-from 1907. Lost to Elizabeth in the 3R of the US Nationals.

3. Louise Osteheimer- (from 1906)

4. "Nellie" (the USTA uses Nancy) Ostheimer. Lost to Elizabeth in the 2R of the 1916 Nationals.

As Mrs CW Adams in the 1916 US Nationals draw we can rule out Elizabeth and Gertrude. This would leave us with either Louise or Nellie as candidates for Mrs CV Adams.

An Elizabeth Ostheimer held a Middle States ranking in 1927-if this is the same Elizabeth as that of 1906 she had one long career!

I have supposed could be Elizabeth because she was the only Ostheimer that I knew.
I had forgotten that three days ago I wrote this result in the thread "1921 results" :
July 16, Central New Jersey Championship, Beach Haven, US
Venue: Engleside TC

FI: Mrs C.W.Adams d. Miss E.Ostheimer 6-1 6-4

I am sorry....

And speaking of another missing piece found-I came up with this based on your information....

POLLAK, HELENE (Helene P Pollak)United States
Born 5 April 1898 in Japan
Died 26 January 1980
Married (1) Edwin A Falk (born circa 1895) circa 1920(still single in 1920 census-wed by March of 1921.
Married (2) Mr Walter
Children Joseph H (born c 1923 and Mary B (born c 1920)

Her father Henry Pollak was born in Trieste, (then part of Austria-Hungary), emigrated to Switzerland, thenJapan, and was in New York in 1912. He ran an import-export business. He died 6 June 1941, aged 71. Her mother was Eva Harris Pollak. The 1920 census indicates Eva was born in New Zealand. Surviving children were Maurice and Helene. (From NYT obit)

First name sometimes incorrectly listed as Helen. She was the 1920 US Indoor champ. Last tennis mention of Mrs Falk in the NYT is 1929. Living in Manhattan in 1930 US census.

There is a Helene Pollak in the California Death Index. Her SSN is 556228037. This Helene Pollak was born in Japan on 5 April 1898 and died 26 January 1980 in San Diego. She apparently remarried and died as Helene P Walter. Her mother’s maiden name was Harris. There is a strong possibility (95% or higher) that this is “our” Helene Pollak.

A passenger list from the Nippon Maru on 17 December 1906 indicates Helene entered San Francisco. Her nationality is listed as Swiss/French.

So... her father was born in Trieste! a beautiful city in my Italy
In those times, Trieste was a very cosmopolitan city, and the family Pollak is a great example of cosmopolitism.

The Ostheimer Sisters

The 4 Ostheimer sisters were the daughters of Alfred James Ostheimer (born 1845)and Ellen Osteheimer of Philadelphia. Mr Ostheimer helped run the Ostheimer Import-Export Business. His contacts led to him being appointed Consul for the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Japan. He traveled often to Europe and received the order of the Iron Cross from Franz Joseph.

The 1900 census reveals the couple had 6 children. The census uses the name Opthemimes (Oestheimer), but other sources are consistent in using Ostheimer.

The 6 Ostheimer siblings:

1. Maurice , born 1873.
2. Alfred James II-born 1875-later a physician
3. Nellie, born May 1877
4. Bessie G-born May 1880 (This =Elizabeth G)
5. Gertrude-bron December 1883.
6. Louise B-born April 1885

The names correspond perfectly with our 4 tennis playing sisters of the early 1900s. In addition, thank to Jimbo, I was able to find:

Louise Ostheimer, married in 1908 to C Willis Adams of Germantown. In 1920 the couple were living in Indianapolis at 1452 North Alabame Street.

Re: The Official Married Names Thread

Any ideas on Cornelia Roosevelt Scovel (no. 287 above)? I couldn't find a date of birth or date of death for her.
--

Also, I think I saw a Grace Moore LeRoy mentioned somewhere. If I'm not mistaken, she features in some American lawn tennis scores as Mrs Robert LeRoy because she married that male player. But I couldn't find anything on Grace.

Ok-thanks to Mark I can shed some light on Mrs Robert LeRoy.

Grace Arnold Moore was born 13 April 1887. She was the child of lawyer/stockbroker Casimer de Rham Moore, who died in 1925, and Harriet Burgess Moore.

Grace was married in her home to Robert LeRoy (2 Feb 1885-7 September 1946) sometime in May of 1911. (Town and Country mentions the wedding). As far as I can tell from the 1920 and 1930 census the couple were childless-and no children are mentioned in Robert's obituary. Robert and her father both went to Columbia University. Casimir was a football star at Columbia, so perhaps Grace inherited some of his athletic ability.

Grace's father left a good sum of money to her and her sister Harriet F Moore. they are mentioned together as owners og a building in October of 1947.

As of yet I have been unable to obtain a date of death for Grace.

Frances Matilda "Fanny" Morris
United Kingdom
Born 1857
Died 19 June 1926
Married Harry Bathurst Christie, 16 September 1882

"Fanny" Morris won the singles title at the West of England Championships in Bath in 1882. Contemporary sources list her as "Mrs F. Morris", but research indicates she wasn't married at the time she won that singles title. What's more, she more than likely stopped playing lawn tennis after her marriage.

A clarification on Judith "Judy" Murray, who appears to have been born in 1959, not 1960, in Logie, near Bridge of Allan:

Judith Mary "Judy" Erskine
United Kingdom
Born 1959
Married William Barron "Willie" Murray, 1988; divorced circa 1999

It appears that they married after the birth of their two sons, Jamie (in 1986) and Andy (1987).

Winifred Mason married Angus Shaw in Argyllshire in 1938. Not sure of the exact date.
