From the London "Times", 21 April 1938: "The marriage took place yesterday at Saint Peter's, Eaton Square, [London], of Captain Philip Foster Glover, Royal Navy, younger son of the late Mr John W. Glover, of Mereleigh, Chelford, Cheshire, and of Mrs Howard Kingscote, of Hewshott Grange, Liphook, Hampshire, and Miss Nancy Lyle, elder daughter of Sir Leonard and Lady Lyle, of Greystoke, Canford Cliffs, Bournemouth. The Bishop of Barking, Prebendary Austin Thompson, and the Reverend F.J. Smith officiated."

Lady Blanche Gladys Roundway (1879-1969) was married to Edward Colston, Lord Roundway on 28 April 1904. Lord Roundway was a member of Parliament and died 29, March, 1944. Their only child, a daughter named Lydia (1910-1924), died tragically from a fall at their manor house. Lady Roundway was the daughter of George Duddell of Queen's Park, Brighton, and Hong Kong.

All very respectable on the surface. In fact her father got wealthy by cornering the opium makret in Hong Kong. He returned to Enlgand to live rather openly with more than one mistress at once.

Our Lady Roundway is equal to Blanche Duddell Colston. She became Lady Roundway on the death of her father-in-law on 17 June, 1925

I’ve looked up the draws and Eva Lundquist played until 1970 and then in Roland Garros 1971 Eva Wennerstrom appeared in the draw.

Elena Pampoulova originally from Bulgaria (born 1972-05-17) and Elena Wagner from Germany seems to be the same person.

Pinning down her date of birth is a tough one-census records vary-with 1 indicating June of 1885 and the other 1886. Perhaps circa 1885-86 is as close as we can get.

Mrs J Saunders Taylor played on until the early 1930s!

Re: The Official Married Names Thread

Constance Laura Mary Langley
United Kingdom
Born 1862
Died 27 October 1934
Married Charles John Chichester Smith, second quarter of 1880

London-born Constance Langley enjoyed a good deal of success in 1882 under her married name of "Mrs CJ Smith". She pushed Maud Watson to 7-5 in the third set in the final of the Cheltenham tournament, held in September of that year.

Constance had four sisters and at least one of them also played tennis, although who exactly this was is not clear. However, a Miss Langley was runner-up to May Langrishe in the women's singles event at the Northern Championships tournament in 1882. This was definitely a sister of Constance. Her sisters' names were Grace, Augusta, Florence and Marion.

In July 1885, Constance and one of her sisters were runners-up in the doubles at the tournament held in Darlington. In later years Constance Smith had three children, two boys and a girl, also called Constance.

Hedwig Neresheimer
Germany/Hungary
Born circa 1885
Died
Married [] von Satzger

In the years circa 1906-12, this German-born player enjoyed much success in German tournaments and tournaments held on the French Riviera. She obtained a doctorate at some point – some German sources refer to her as “Frau Doktor Neresheimer” – though she probably wasn't a medical doctor. She married a Hungarian by the name of von Satzger (first name unknown) thus acquiring Hungarian nationality.

Eveline Maude Froude
United Kingdom
Born 1872
Died 1965
Married (1) Sidney Nutcombe-Quicke, circa 1895, deceased 27 April 1898
Married (2) Reginald Crundall-Punnett, 1913

I'm not sure how this player became known as "Betty" – she was probably just called that by family and friends. She reached the final of the Carlton Club New Year Meeting in Cannes as late as January 1925.

Besides the name there is an other problem: mrs.Nutcombe-Quicke got many results from 1907 to 1913, and there was a gap from 1913 to 1925 when appeared the final in Cannes. In 1925 she would have been 53 years old!
The result of Cannes shows her as Elizabeth Crundall-Punnett.

You're right on all counts. It was I who researched most of those early results and put them up within this website in threads I created myself. I also originally wrote "Elizabeth Crundall-Punnett" because I heard that her first name was "Betty". Personally, I think she could have played into her fifties because players of that era tended to play on and on. After all, they weren't playing for money or ranking points or other things that players of today tend to compete for. Players like Dorothea Lambert Chambers, Phyllis Satterthwaite, Ethel Larcombe and Elizabeth Ryan played on well into their forties.

I can't believe that there were two Mrs Nutcombe-Quickes, both of whom ended up marrying a Mr Crundall-Punnett. That said, it's difficult to establish a sold tennis link of any kind. But Eveline was clearly a player who liked the clay courts of the French Riviera and Switzerland, and took part in the tournaments there when she felt like it.

I have more specific info on Mrs Nutcombe-Quicke/Mrs Crundall-Punnett, from the British Births/Marriages/Deaths index, so can edit the entry in no. 181 above, as follows:

Eveline Maude Froude-Bellew
United Kingdom
Born second quarter of 1872
Died third quarter of 1965
Married (1) Sidney Nutcombe-Quicke, second quarter of 1897, deceased 27 April 1898
Married (2) Reginald Crundall-Punnett, second quarter of 1913

Eveline was 93 when she died. Reginald Crundall-Punnett outlived her by a couple of years. He was a distinguished geneticist. An obituary of Reginald mentioned that he became very good at tennis after his marriage in 1913 to Eveline, "...herself a notable player".
--

Orignally posted by newmark401:

According to the London "Times", Eveline Maude Froude, widow of Sidney Nutcombe-Quicke, married Reginald Crundall-Punnett in St Mary Abbots church, Kensington, London, on 13 June 1913. Reginald was described as "Fellow of Gonville and Caius and Arthur Balfour Professor of Genetics in the University of Cambridge."

Nelly Jeanne Adamson (I've rarely seen her first name written as "Nellie")*

* All of the main wikipedia entries on Nelly Adamson state that she married a "Tod" Robbins in Villefranche on the French Riviera on 16 January 1934. This man's real name was Clarence Aaron Robbins and he was an American-born author. Apparently he was the first of Nelly's three husbands. He died in 1949. Most sources give 22 February 2010 as the date of Nelly's death.

Re: The Official Married Names Thread

Some information on the German tennis-playing Weihermann sisters, all of whom were born in Frankfurt. They were the daughters of Siegmund Weihermann and Ida Scheidt, natives of Kitzingen and Frankfurt respectively. There were four daughters. The eldest, Lotte (b. 1891) does not appear to have played tennis, at least not competitively. She was a medical doctor by profession and spent most of her life living and working in England.

The next daughter, Ilse (b. 1893), was the top German tennis player of the early to mid-1920s. Her husband's name was either Karl or Erich. They had one child, a boy, who died age 12 (circa 1931); they separated afterwards. Circa 1938 Ilse Friedleben and her mother left Germany to live in London, where Ilse worked a tennis coach for a time.

The third daughter, Toni (b. 1895), also played competitive tennis and taught the sport too. She married a businessman, Paul Richter. He ran an export business in Trinidad. Toni is probably the Frau Richter mentioned in some Continental tennis results in the late 1920s/early 1930s.

The fourth daughter, Anna (b. 1897), also played tennis competitively and was a tennis teacher too. She married twice. With her first husband she had two children, with whom she later emigrated to the United States where she married her second husband.

It appears that the Weihermanns were Jewish, so it is probably not surprising that the daughters and their mother ended up living outside Germany.

Gladys Medalie
United States
Born 13 May 1922
Died 22 June 2003
Married Julius Heldman, 1942

"Bud" Collins includes the above two dates in his history of tennis. Gladys did play some competitive tennis, but is remembered more for founding "World Tennis Magazine" and for contributing to the formation of the Virginia Slims tour in the early 1970s. Collins mentions that Gladys committed suicide in 2003. Both of her daughters, in particular Julie, also enjoyed success on the tennis tour.

Ruth Isabel Pennington-Legh
United Kingdom
Born 1871
Died 1952
Married Edward Bluett Winch, 9 February 1899

This is the "Miss P. Legh", who played under both her maiden and married names, becoming Ruth Winch after her marriage. Pennington was not her first name. Herbert Chipp mentions her as "Miss Pennington Legh" in his "Lawn Tennis Recollections" (1898).

From the "Cheshire Observer", 21 January 1899: "The marriage arranged between Edward Bluett Winch, third son of George Winch, Holcombe, Chatham and Ruth Isabel Legh, only daughter of the late John Pennington-Legh, Norbury Booths, Knutsford, Cheshire, and Mrs Legh, Gladwyn, Branksome Park, Bournemouth will take place quietly at one o'clock on Thursday the 9th of February at Runstall Church, Tunbridge Wells."
