Re: ** Masha News and Articles! ** Vol. 2

Not often you hear about her Cole Haan Sales

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-0...nike-unit.html

Maria Sharapova Rises in Tennis Rankings as Her Shoes Boost Nike Unit

Maria Sharapova finished last season inside the top 5 in women’s tennis for the first time since 2007. At Nike Inc.’s Cole Haan unit, she’s No. 1.
The fourth-seeded Russian, who plays her Australian Open opening round match today against Gisela Dulko of Argentina, suffered a serious shoulder injury in 2008 after winning in Melbourne, the third of her major titles. The time off gave the 24-year-old a chance to pursue another interest: fashion.
The $148 flat ballet shoe she designed is one of the best sellers for the Nike wholly-owned subsidiary. She was forced into a nine-month break from the game in mid-2008 because of shoulder surgery, giving her a chance to focus on something other than tennis, Sharapova said. Her first Cole Haan collection was introduced in the spring of 2009.
“It was really an experiment for me,” said Sharapova, who gets a percentage of sales from both her Cole Haan line and a collection of Nike tennis dresses, which she also designs. “I certainly did not think I would be making any money from this because I had zero experience.”
Sharapova won her first major at Wimbledon age 17 in 2004. Grand slam titles followed at the 2006 U.S. Open and the 2008 Australian Open, making her the highest-paid female athlete in the world. The Russian, who moved to the U.S. aged seven, earns $25 million a year from prize money and endorsements with companies including Nike Inc. and Swiss luxury watch brand Tag Heuer, according to Forbes. In tennis, only 16-time major winner Roger Federer and second-ranked Rafael Nadal earn more.
No. 126
Having dropped to No. 126 three years ago following surgery, Sharapova last year climbed back up the rankings thanks to a semifinals spot at Roland Garros and a runner-up place at Wimbledon. She also won in Rome and Cincinnati. The Russian has beaten Dulko two of the three times they’ve met, although the 68th ranked Argentine won the last match at the 2009 Wimbledon.
Also in action today at Melbourne Park, No. 4 seed Andy Murray of Britain plays Ryan Harrison of the U.S. while defending champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia starts against Italy’s Paolo Lorenzi. Former champion Serena Williams of the U.S. faces Tamira Paszek of Austria.
Sharapova gives Nike and Cole Haan, a clothing, shoes, handbag and accessory brand based in Yarmouth, Maine, access to a global audience, Nigel Currie, director of London-based sports marketing agency brandRapport said in an interview.
“There are very few sports stars, in particular in women’s sports, that are instantly recognizable around the world, and Sharapova is one of them,” Currie said.
Cole Haan generates less than 3 percent of total sales at Nike, the world’s largest sporting-goods company. The company declined to release sales figures for Sharapova’s shoe line.
Getting Sharapova on board gave the brand the chance to connect with a “younger” audience, said Ivan Wicksteed, Cole Haan’s chief marketing officer.
Chasing Grand Slam Success
Sharapova comes into 2012 with more confidence after getting further into majors last year, which allowed her to finish inside the top 10 for the first time since 2008. She was No. 1 in May 2008.
“It was really important to have that type of year, with better results,” Sharapova said. “As with any sport, you gain confidence on where your game is and belief.”
An ankle injury sustained in Tokyo in September derailed a shot at taking over the No. 1 ranking from Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki at the end of last year.
To end the season that way was “disappointing,” said Sharapova, who pulled out of a lead-up event Brisbane two weeks ago because of her left ankle. “Injuries are always the toughest part.”
Entering the Australian Open having last played on the WTA Tour in October is going to be “a bit different,” said the Siberian-born right-hander, who has been training in Melbourne for the past two weeks.
“But you don’t have too many options, you just go with what you have and believe in what you have and train as well as you can and put all that effort onto the training court.”
Coming up with a new design that will rival the success of the ballet shoe is also not going to be easy.
“When you start with - let’s call it a ‘luck shoe’ - it’s pretty tough,” Sharapova said. “The great thing is that now you have customers that are coming back to get another pair in a different color when the one that they bought wears out.”

Re: ** Masha News and Articles! ** Vol. 2

R1 Interview:

Q. Do you want to break it down? It's been a while since you played. Talk about how you struck the ball, movement, all that.

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Yeah. You know, I had a pretty tough first‑round opponent coming into my first event of the year, someone that's beaten me the last time we played at a major.

She can definitely play some really good tennis. I think I was just mentally prepared for that. I was getting ready, I've been practicing here.

Overall, you know, I think I played pretty good and aggressive, and she's someone that likes to have time to create her shots. You know, she has great hands. It was just important to try to take that away from her.

Yeah, I was a little bit sloppy in a couple of the games. Other than that, I thought it was good for a first round.

Q. Did you have fear of the ankle?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: No.

Q. Or when you went out, did you feel you practiced hard enough?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Yeah. You know, I think from the past I could have gone into Brisbane, maybe another event, and said I might not be a hundred percent tennis‑ready, but I want to come into the Grand Slam with a few matches.

That's not really the way my mentality is. I'd rather come in feeling good physically than feeling like I played a lot of matches. It's more important to me than anything.

I've been on the tour for many years, played enough tournaments, I just want to be as ready as I can for the big ones.

Q. It was pretty hot out there. How did it affect you?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Yeah, I've been through many stages of weather here in the last couple of weeks. I came here. First couple days I think it was 40 degrees. Actually had to close the roof for practice, in one of the practices, and then we went into winter weather, then back into the heat. It's quite random.

But, yeah, you know, I like this weather. Obviously I prefer it to be a little bit cooler. This is part of the Australian Open: you just never know what you're going to get. Maybe the next few days it will cool down. But it does get, on the court, pretty warm.

Q. I know she beat you at Wimbledon. You played exhibitions with her. Is that familiarity level, you kind of know what's coming?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Yeah. We know each other's games really well. Like you say, we grew up together in the juniors. She's one of the few that I played doubles with actually in my so‑called short‑term doubles career.

Yeah, you know, I know how she can play. I know the quality that she can produce. Some of her best tennis is on clay. I think that's when she likes the ball to be kind of a little bit higher. She likes to get you off the court. She has many weapons when you give her that time.

I think it was just important, you know, not to give her that, what she likes.

Q. Walking on the court, talk about what kind of feeling do you get? Is the excitement still there? You can't wait to start?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Yeah, especially this one, I couldn't wait to start. It feels like forever since I've been, you know, playing a match where I feel pretty good physically. It's just nice to go into a match you know that you're going to compete again at such a high level in front of so many people, especially a place where I've won before.

Yeah, I've had enough training. After the off‑season, you're ready to play, ready to go out and play matches.

Q. Back to what you said before, you've been on the tour now a while. Do you feel like you need a lot of matches going into tournaments, or are you experienced enough now and you've obviously hit enough balls in training where you feel you can go out there and it doesn't matter as much?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: It sometimes depends. Of course I would have preferred to have played a few matches, there's no doubt. But really, my thought process is maybe a little bit different, as I told you before.

But I have experience, you know, in how to handle going into a Grand Slam maybe with not as many matches. You know, went into Wimbledon not having played an event before; whereas maybe years before I played Birmingham and all that.

I feel like if you can put in the time on the practice court and if you're healthy enough, you have that energy, because sometimes when you go out on the court, you keep practicing, practicing, sometimes the concentration, the level is not as high as when you go out and you compete and play a match.

But if you can have that intensity pretty high and if you feel pretty good, then sometimes it's even better to have that practice week.

Q. I'm guessing you don't know much about your next opponent.

MARIA SHARAPOVA: No, I don't, not too much. I think my coach will do a little scouting.

Re: ** Masha News and Articles! ** Vol. 2

R2 Interview

Q. Do you draw a lot of satisfaction from a match like that?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: As opposed to what?

Q. It's not a real test for you.

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Well, in the first five or six games, I think four of those went to deuce. We went back and forth. A few of those games she was up 40‑15 and I came back. Those are tough games because you put yourself in a position where you have to pull through.
Yeah, she has a big game. I didn't know too much about her, but saw a little bit on video. When you haven't played someone before, it's more a matter of how you're playing and how you're figuring out about her game from the beginning rather than thinking too much of what is she going to do.

Q. Can you tell yet where your level is or you need to be pushed and tested more? Can you feel how you're hitting the ball at this point or not yet?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: I mean, I think every match is a test. Whichever next one comes, I mean, the goal is to get through and keep playing more. I came in here not playing too many at all.
It's just about taking it one at a time and improving, because it's only going to get tougher from here. That's the goal.

Q. How do you feel on court? How do you feel you're striking the ball?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: For the first couple rounds, not having played competitively for a while, I feel pretty good.

Q. And that approach is working for you, better to feel fit and strong rather than having a lot of matches under your belt?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Yeah, I've been on tour for many years. I've played many matches, many tournaments. I've never really been a player that just goes to a tournament to add a tournament on her agenda or, you know, go out there just to play.
My goal is to be ready for the important ones, for the big ones. That's what matters at this stage in my career to me. I try to prepare as best as I can for them.
I would have loved to have played a tournament before, but things don't always go according to plan. This is one of those times where I had to come here and train instead. Thought it was a better scenario.

Q. With the time change, your schedule, Sasha's schedule, do days go by where you have no contact with him?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: No, we do, twice a day, morning and evening.

Q. You get it done?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Oh, yeah, absolutely. It actually works out as good as it can. When I wake up, it's evening time there. Going to sleep, it's morning time here. It's as good as it can be.

Q. After the events of last night, Baghdatis breaking his racquet, how do you feel about breaking your racquet on court?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: I didn't know he broke a racquet, but I'm not surprised that he broke a racquet. Personally I haven't broken too many in my career. Don't recall breaking one during a match. Have broken a couple at practice.
Um, but must be a good feeling. I mean, yeah, just let it all go, I guess.

Q. Serena Williams was afraid of the bugs out on center court. Just wondering, are you afraid of insects or anything like that?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: I don't know. Are you? You look like someone that could be afraid of bugs.

Q. I am actually a little bit.

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Yeah? Okay.

Q. Do you have any phobias like that?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: I mean, I don't like spiders and all that stuff. But I think they're staying away from center court, so I think I'll be okay.

Q. It's been pointed out that a fifth of the women's matches in the last several days have opponents winning one or two games. Today you had a pretty good run. Serena just bageled her opponent, as well. What is your comment about the depth of the women's tour at the moment?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Well, you never know what you're going to get. Sometimes we come out and we play three‑set matches from the beginning, and then it's a question of, well, you're top 5 in the world. Why is someone challenging you to three sets from the beginning?
I think it's just an excuse to make another story. That's really what it all comes down to. I think personally, you know, my goal is to go into a match and play my game. If I do it well enough and come out winning 6‑0, 6‑1, then I've done a good job.

Q. Not stronger or weaker than necessarily any other time in your career?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: It's always different. You know, players come, players go. You have a newer generation coming up, and also players that when I started are still playing.
I mean, it's always going to change, obviously. We're not getting any younger. Yeah, time moves on.

Q. What keeps you going? Those next Grand Slam opportunities?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: As far as career‑wise?

Q. Yes.

MARIA SHARAPOVA: This year is a big year for me because I'll be playing in the Olympics, which has been a dream of mine since I was a young girl. Growing up in Russia, tennis wasn't a big sport back then. It was all about being an Olympian, especially the winter sports.
Fortunately we've been able to change that a little bit and tennis has become extremely popular back in Russia.
Overall, I was extremely disappointed I missed Beijing. This year, to have a long grass court season, will be fun.

Q. Do you have any mixed doubles aspirations?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Um, well, I haven't really given it a thought. I haven't even thought about the doubles yet. I think that's something that maybe we'll be discussing when I go to Moscow in a few weeks, see what the plans are, yeah, all of that.

Q. Who could you see yourself playing with?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: I think the only doubles partner I had was Max Mirnyi. I take pride in beating Cara Black and her brother actually at the US Open. Go doubles!
Yeah, that's my only real experience in mixed doubles. I actually played with Yevgeny Kafelnikov once, I believe, in an exhibition in Hong Kong. That was a disaster.

Q. Have you talked to Alex, Dmitry, any of those guys?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: I haven't discussed any mixed doubles yet.

Q. They say the world is going to end this year. What would you like to do or achieve before the world blows up?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Why do you have to ask the most ridiculous questions?

Q. Sorry, it's just our show.

MARIA SHARAPOVA: What would I like to do? I mean, is there any proof to this?

Q. The Mayan calendar predicts it. There's no real proof.

MARIA SHARAPOVA: I don't know. I really don't know. It's really pointless right now.

Q. Did you have a mentor when you came on tour, someone assigned to you?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: On tour?

Q. Yes.

MARIA SHARAPOVA: I think Mary Joe Fernandez was. It was part of the program of the tour, but I think we only met a couple of times. We might have cheated a bit (laughter).

Q. What do you mean? How so?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: I think you have to fill out the form and stuff. But I've known Mary Joe since I was young, so...
Yeah, we did meet a few times. It's all very basic, educational things. It's very important when you're 14, 15, 16, going into that stage of being a professional
But I think I'd been on the tour for a couple years then.

Q. Was there anybody that was playing that helped break you into the tour when you came on, an older player?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: I mean, I did get a chance to play with Monica Seles a bit. She was one of my idols growing up. I just loved her determination on court. I think when I just started playing professionally in big tournaments, she was kind of ending her career.
And Lindsay Davenport was also someone that was extremely nice when I was growing up.

Q. Have you talked to them about being on tour or have they talked to you?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: No, nothing really like tennis‑wise. I think it's more conversational.
