Irina really should have won, 4-1 up in the first set then served for the set at 65 in the second  No doubt, Barty did start playing better but Irina let her emotions get in her way when she started losing points.
Having said so, her fight from losing the 4-1 lead in the first to take it to 57 and fighting all the way back from 1-4 down in the second shows the progress she has made in terms of her mental strength. Her forehand is also becoming a real weapon in addition to her strong backhand, it will be exciting to see her in pros.

I also saw Irina at the semi-final/final at Wimbledon. She is very impressive and should be proud of her accomplishments. Relations between her dad and Tarpichev/Kamelzon (head coach of Russian tennis) are real bad, so it´s possible, I guess. Same with Gavrilova and Putintseva  Even though her mom only last month denied that Belgians have ever approached them or they would agree. |
