Re: Camila Giorgi Cheering Thread!!

50 grand isn't much money for two people to live on -- especially traveling on the road all the time, eating out every meal, etc. He may also pay for hitting partners for her at times. Remember she made the trip to Wimbledon, stayed in London. That's not cheap. Neither is staying in New York City for a week for qualifying there.

I'm not a real expert on tennis talent, especially the women's game. But clearly, Camila has limitations: she's on the small side; and she has to go for a lot on her serve or the good players will crush it if she just rolls it in. When she serves well, she is capable of fantastic tennis. But when she's missing that aggressive second serve, she is very vulnerable. That's how she lost the final in Raleigh to Rampre. Camila's serve was poor. (Her dad said she woke up very stiff that day and never loosened up). And Rampre served the match of her life. Her assets are that she is incredibly fit (at least by looking at her,one would think this) and she plays great in the clutch, seemingly fearless tennis and usually coming through. But one has to wonder how far this can take her.

I became a fan of the women on the challenger circuit after watching how hard they battle for these wins -- which mean the world to them, their whole future! And for so little money. To me the drama seems more intense for the challengers than it is for the women on the WTA circuit, most of whom are financially secure -- at least for the near future. I could well imagine the incredible stresses that Camila and her father must deal with on a daily and weekly basis, not only winning matches but just staying on the road.

Perhaps she should have applied for US citizenship so she could get the support of the USTA. I know Irina Falconi is originally from Ecuador, but is a US citizen now and benefits from USTA support. Is there any support for Camila from an Italian national tennis organization?

Whatever, I think Camila is having a terrific year, and it would be a terrible shame for her not to continue on as professional.

(1)Romina Oprandi (ITA) d. Camila Giorgi (ITA) 63 67(5) 75

i didn't expect such a close match, but considering how crazy would have driven Kimi's game our Camila, it's not that bad

Re: Camila Giorgi Cheering Thread!!

Magikarpetta coerced me into watching Camila at Wimbledon and I sort of became a fan. I loved her game and her attitude () but what's wrong with her father? Is he too overbearing, or just clueless? Or a mix of the both? He sounds like the anti-Piotr if he's refusing to allow any endorsements!

Yes. Italian Federation gave her some money some years ago, but at this point I think her father burnt all.

Re: Camila Giorgi Cheering Thread!!

This is all a tough thing to comment on, since I know so very little. I've seen Camila and her father at two tournaments. I don't know anything about his tennis background, but he seems to understand the game pretty well. Did he ever play at a high level when he was younger? I know this: almost all tennis players who get into the game and become very good at it do it because they had a parent who loved the game and introduced their child to it and then either coached them (and spent thousands of hours doing so) while the child was developing, or they had the money to pay other people to coach and develop the child. Chirs Evert, Jimmy Connors, Andre Agassi,Maria Sharapova and the Williams sisters and so many more players come to mind. It's not always a father. Sometimes it is a mother, as it was with Connors and probably Andy Murray. So it's hard to criticize any parent who develops their child into a tennis player. Could other people do it better? No doubt, experienced professionals probably could. But that takes a lot of money, and unless a family is wealthy the only way this can happen is for the child to be exceptionally talented and earn a free ride at one of the tennis academies. I thought perhaps this was the case with Camila when I first saw her, probably training out of a Florida tennis school and playing ITF tournaments in the Southeast to gain experience. I know Camila's father is devoting his life to his daughter to turn her into a professional. He is making many personal and financial sacrifices, certainly. Without him I'm sure she wouldn't be doing what she's doing now. I can only say that I hope she can keep moving up in the rankings and begin winning on the WTA level and become financially secure. I know she is very close.

Re: Camila Giorgi Cheering Thread!!

Great post Gasquetules. Yes a good professional coach can help but is also expensive. Her father seems to know tennis and hit a ball very well. I also see her hitting with male hitters and is probably the hardest working player at many ITF tournaments.

Re: Camila Giorgi Cheering Thread!!

Great news! I'm sure Sergio will remain involved in some way. But I believe you reach a point where you have to get some outside coaching to take a talented junior to the professional level. Gasquet's parents took him to the #1 world junior ranking but didn't have the experience to take him higher. I'm sure it's the same with Camila.

End of the year, this is a great time to make a big change. We will all have to watch closely to see how things develop in 2012 for her. Are they going to continue to operate out of south Florida or return to Europe?
