Re: Martina Muller cheering thread

Re: Martina Muller cheering thread

August 18, 2011
HANNOVER, Germany - Germany's Martina Müller, a one-time WTA champion who made it as high as No.33 in the world, not only got married on the weekend but also announced her retirement from professional tennis.

Müller played her first WTA main draw at Hannover in 2000. With her tenacious, grinding style she compiled a strong career résumé, highlighted by winning Budapest in 2002 and finishing runner-up at Palermo in 2007 (losing to Agnes Szavay in the final). Her best season came in 2006, when she ended the year at No.34 (she set her career-high ranking of No.33 the following April).

The German also conquered some marquee names along the way - she had one Top 10 win (over Patty Schnyder in 2006) and another Top 20 win (over Shahar Peer in 2007). She also captured one WTA doubles title.

Due to a neck injury, Müller didn't play after March 2009. She tried to come back several times but the injury was just too much the last two years.

Müller gave birth to her son Jonas in July 2010, and this past weekend - Saturday, August 13, 2011 - she married longtime boyfriend Florian Skibbe, with whom she had been with for more than seven years. The 28-year-old Müller announced her retirement from professional tennis afterwards.

"I really enjoyed my time on the WTA. It was a really good time that I will never forget," she commented. "I made so many friends and I wish them all well!"
All the best for the future, Martina!
