And I think that only 19 GS junior titles (out of 235) have been won by future GS champ.

Junior slams are not important at all. It tells nothing about WTA.
thats because most of the time if the player was really good they would be playing the senior tour instead of playing junior GS events

Dementieva should not have retired healthy in her 20's, but she's a multi-millionaire and has options.

When you read about fashion lines, and selling products, these are new distractions that come from having the high profile endorsement deals

The Navratilova days are over. Great players wont have long careers at the top anymore, imo
If Dementieva really wants that major title she will regret retiring at a time when it has opened up for her. Players her age are getting their chance to win. She would be competitive with Zvonareva, Na, Woz Woz and Schiavone. Hard to know what she really wants.

Exactly!

So we still need the next 4 winners to be new people in order to break the all-time record. I think we can probably do it though

Re: 17 successive junior slams in a row won by different girls: WTA's future reflecti

I think oneo f the reason is that once they won 1 junior slam, the girls start to be less commited to the juniors, look at robson and Gavrilova. Robson is also injured really often. Those start to play more pro tournies and just think it's irrelevant to play the juniors.

Re: 17 successive junior slams in a row won by different girls: WTA's future reflecti

Actually, it's the same thing for every sport! Some successful juniors will break through the top and others won't..

You must consider that a junior tournament only consists of players from one group of age, while the senior tournaments have draws with players from 17 to more than 30 years old!

This very fact makes it impossible that every junior slam winner can win many titles as a senior!

Re: 17 successive junior slams in a row won by different girls: WTA's future reflecti

I think it makes for an interesting future in the next couple of years, theres loads of very talented juniors about to try and crack the pro tour and in a couple of years times their could be many more names at the top of the game battling it out.

Lena D. was never the sharpest tool in the shed re: career management, so it figures that she'd retire at a moment in which it made no sense for her to do so.

I suppose she stopped believing after RG.

Before that, she could still hope for a further opportunity - a draw to fall totally apart, her opponents in the latter rounds collapsing, or even for a "last hurrah" dream run beating great players (like say Ljuba Truba's IW title last year). At RG, for a while, it seemed like she might get just that, but she just folded under the pressure of knowing that this might be her very last shot at a big title, and it became obvious even to her that she'd never be able to take one of those last few opportunities, because, even if they presented themselves, she'd be the one to bottle them.

Re: 17 successive junior slams in a row won by different girls: WTA's future reflecti

I figured I'd bump this since we're now at 18 different girls in a row, with Ons Jabeur winning the juniors at this year's French Open. Just 3 more different girls and we'll break the all time record
