Reported on November 30, 2010
Russian Fed Cup captain Shamil Tarpishchev says that Maria Sharapova, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Dinara Safina and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova will be Russia's line-up for its first-round tie against France in Moscow on Feb. 5-6.
"Sharapova has agreed to play the first round," said Tarpishchev.
However, a source in the Sharapova camp told TENNIS.com that she’s only “very likely” to play. Sharapova must make herself available to play Fed Cup at least once next year if she wants to play the 2012 Olympics, and could play in another round. She’s competed in Fed Cup once, in 2008, against Israel after winning the Australian Open.—Matthew Cronin

Tarpischev says Sharapova definite 4 Fed Cup vs France, but I just heard "very likely." For sure it will depend on how well she does at AO

Fed Cup is for losers. Though, if its about the Olympics she should play.

Re: ** Masha News and Articles! ** Vol. 2
To be eligible to play the Olympics, she only has to make herself available for Fed Cup ties...
She doesn't actually have to play any!

Re: ** Masha News and Articles! ** Vol. 2
Which is taken more seriously... Davis Cup by men? or Fed Cup by women?
(maybe I need to start a new <research> thread)

She won't play Fed Cup anyway because she's going to win the AO.

Re: ** Masha News and Articles! ** Vol. 2
Specifically, official nominations are due Jan 26. The captain can make substitutions until 24 hours before the first match.
In tennis, NO committment is anything more than "very likely" until the girl shows up & walks on court. Yank sports press "sources" never see that as an issue with a Williams, no matter how many times they flake out.
It's ALWAYS an issue when it's about Sharapova playing for Russia.
They'll carry on, doubting she'll play until she does--then they'll black out coverage, just like they did when she played against Israel.

No fair! And no wonder she is somewhat 'under-rated'. (me I'm happy to tip the scales back the other way).
