When my opponent celebrates the fact that I made unforced error, usually I look at him for a while and laugh. It helps.

Its kind of hard to not let it get to you. I havent played anyone who does it (because I play with friends only)

But when I used to play Waterpolo for my high school, we once faced a team of boys who would say nasty things when you got close to them, the refree couldnt hear it ofcourse so it was of no use. You just block it out and try to keep concentrated, becomes easier with practice. One of the tricks that I use is to remind myself of the basics if I start losing concentration.

I actually played a kid recently like this. And for me, it's always tough to stay determined and calm in this type of situation. I played the kid 2-3 times at this point and also have seen him tournaments and he isn't known to be like this. Actually if anything, I've seen him play a friend of mine, who is a good, aggressive player and win because he always was so calm.

But this time, he was feigning confidence from every part of the court. Screaming "COME ON!" "LET'S GO!" after LITERALLY every single point. Even on errors (and at this point I was hitting a lot of them, I was playing a poor match) I would hear this, so I'd try to laugh it off on changeovers. Didn't work because it only forced him to scream it louder. So then I tried to say "Shut up" across the court. Even worse idea. Towards the end of the match (at this point, I stopped trying, I was mentally defeated) he even said "COME ON!" to a net cord winner. It was a piss poor effort on my part. I lost the match 6-4, 6-2.

He's a good player, solid counterpuncher, but it was embarrassing from me because I've played lots of matches, lots of tournaments, and to let something like this get to me at this point, it's stupid.

I lost a match last weekend, purely because my opponent pissed me off so much. I was much ebtter, and the shotmaker in the match, but all his 'come ons' at my UEs pissed me off so much I choked the first (unusal for me) and was so pissed off I lost the second easily. I won the third after regrouping but let him into my head again. Goddamn annoying it was.

Take it as a learning experience. Focus on yourself. THe moment you are focusing on a players grunts, gesticulations, cheers, you have removed focus from your game and strategy. Keep your focus in the moment. Do NOT get angry! Very few tennis players can actually channel anger into playing better tennis. The opposite is the norm for most players. The best thing you can do at this point, is to make your opponent start making errors rather than you hitting winners. This style of play gives you more margin for consistency and will also frustrate your opponent.

Also, the better player is the player that won. It is irritating when people say I was the better player but my opponent won. Your strokes may look prettier but that doesn't make you the more effective player.

My friend is so annoying with that. He yells "Come on" and lately "Allez" as well ( soooooo ) in a VERY obnoxious way on shots people miss that should be a putaway. Granted, he usually does that after long rallies or after being down... but is it necessary to think you are Serena Williams "comeback from 1-5 in the 3rd set queen" or something on the court and yell that stuff when your opponent misses easy shots that should be put away. Please don't tell me it's just about pumping yourself up and fighting back, because when you do it on shots which would have been winners by anyone who isn't an idiot ( aka me ), it's extremely obnoxious and, no, it doesn't make you the fucking Serena Williams-level fighter.

Anyways, the key is of course to focus on your own game... but it's extremely difficult not to find that distracting (and grating). I played a long deuce game with him yesterday and I would hit winners on deuce points and then completely fuck up the ad points by hitting out or into the net.... of course that was proceeded by bouts of "allez" and "come on" and fist pumping. And, yes, he is good at fighting back, but it's just embarrassing to do that when your opponent misses shots. I would do something as obnoxious in return, but then I'm not going to.... It's just something you need to deal with.

Oh yeah, another thing he does is yelling out before the ball even went out. Yes, he does when it's actually going out, but before it even hit the court. As he tells me, it's necessary to let the opponent know his shot is out. Yes, sure, AFTER it hit the court, not before.

I can't believe I like Lleyton Hewitt, and he does that shit.

I say "Come on" a lot when I'm playing one of my close friends. Our matches are usually VERY competitive. We usually play the best of 3 sets. When we are on court, we are NOT friends. The whole stare down and come on when someone hits an UE is usually what we do. Lol. We're men and we hate to lose, so thats why its so competitive. We've busted a few rackets playing each other. Lol. My last racket left a permanently mark on the court.
