Re: 1950

Thanks Guys-I will try and ad this Monday.

David-just to double check. Under the rankings (class a) you have Alfi Caroll-could you double check to see if it is Elfi?

Thanks.

Apparently Elfi (or Alfi) was an Austrian tennis star before moving to the US and marrying an American.

Re: 1950

It does say Alfi in ALT. When I was typing it I had the thought that that was wrong. I changed it to Elfi, which is as she appears in US champs, etc. I didn't realize she was Austiran - is that Elfi Kriegs-Au?

Re: 1950

Updated again up to this point.

David-I can confirm that Elfi Kriegs is Carroll. Looking in the New York Times she is first mentionned playing a US event in 1940. She doesn't appear again really until the late 1940s-perhaps she had kids during this time? The height of her US playing career was from 1949 to 1952, when she won the Eastern US Clay title for four years running. The NYT described her as "a slightly built, blue-eyed woman who possesses a mighty forehand."

The western grip forehand carried a lot of topspin-a legacy from growing up on central European clay.

Thanks for the update on Elfi Kriegs/Carroll. I wonder how many more women I have split in two in my mind and database.

Re: 1950

I'm not much of a tennis historian but I think this would be better thread if it contained action photos of that era. Thoughts, please?

It's an idea-David-Ugarte-what do you think?

Another option would be to create a separate thread for pics (and more commentary on the year) that would not compete with the results.
