I think I'm gonna have to learn german.

For now, maybe you guys could tell us if there's something new in there. How about that? Anything we didn't know?

Thanks for the link, though.

I'll take a closer look at the interview now and will translate the most interesting passages "in a rush" (= linguistically not so accurate).

Pages 164-166, excerpts:

The interview takes place in a class room, normally Ms. Lowry teaches journalism here. Agassi moves slowly, as if his back and knees are still hurting. He wears black boots, black jeans, and a black shirt. To this a chain of letters: "Daddy rocks".

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SPIEGEL: Are you and your wife Steffi Graf soulmates actually?
Agassi: Oh no, there are many differences. Stefanie is more secure, more clear, stronger then me.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SPIEGEL: You both have been made being stars by possessive fathers.
Agassi: We both were at grips of our fathers, that's true. I already told several people that I hated tennis, really hated, and all of them tried to talk me out of it: "No, that's not true, Andre, actually you love tennis." Do you know what Stefanie answered: "Don't we all hate it?".

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SPIEGEL: Ihr Vater Emmanuel ist armenischer Iraner, Einwanderer, spricht fünf Sprachen …
Agassi: … aber keine richtig. Er vertauscht die Buchstaben: „Vork your wolley.“
SPIEGEL: Ein gewalttätiger Mann?
Agassi: Sehr.
Vorfahrtsregeln gestritten hatte.

SPIEGEL: Your father Emmanuel is an Iranian of Armenian descent, speaks five languages ...
Agassi: ... but none of them correctly. He mixes up the letters: "Vork your wolley".
SPIEGEL: A violent man?
Agassi: Very much so. And choleric. He had an axe handle in his car, sometimes a pistol. I was present when he knocked out men with whom he argued about traffic rules.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SPIEGEL: Es gab Prügel?
Agassi: Ja.

SPIEGEL: You got beatings? [by his father]
Agassi: Yes.
SPIEGEL: There was this ball machine which you called the "Dragon"?
Agassi: Yes. 2500 balls a day, one million in a year were thought to make me invincible.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Agassi: (...)

Agassi: (...) It was a horror to be permanently evaluated by colleagues, the media, and the public. But the worst of all was what Boris Becker said after his victory in th semi-final of Wimbledon in 1995: that the others don't like me, that I am elitist, that I get special treatment by tournament directors and that I can not win on windy outer courts. It was very personal, it caused a deep wound.
SPIEGEL: In contrast to Steffi Graf or you, Boris Becker seems to never have coped with the end of his career; he appears unstable, an easy victim for the media. Pitying him was an unthinkable emotion ten years ago. Do you have to say something to him?
Agassi: I like Boris, and if we would go to a restaurant today, we both would say that the aversion for each other is a very long time ago and that back then we were talking like adolescents. Immature. But our lives are not connected anymore; three minutes on a centre court of some sort for a honoring of some sort, that's it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SPIEGEL: You were seen as arrogant.
Agassi: But I did not know who I was. I was scared of losses, of mockery, of the public and of my father. I hated this sport.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SPIEGEL: Again: why this book?
Agassi: I have a lot to tell, because I believe that many people wake up in a life which they did not chose. Adults are perhaps in a marriage in which they don't want to be. Teenagers do the hopeless attempt to understand themselves. I think that my book can be a platform, hope, inspiration, a tool, enabling people to change their life.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SPIEGEL: You don't need money? [as a reason for writing the book]
Agassi: (laughs) No, and I have more to lose than to win: endorsements, a reputation, my character or the public assessment of my character, relationships. (...)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SPIEGEL: Mag Ihre Frau Ihr Werk?

SPIEGEL: Does your wife like your opus?
Agassi: Let us say this way: she is a very, very private woman.
SPIEGEL: Therefore the question.
Agassi: She trusts me and she knows that I take care of what is important to her. But she also feels love, respect, and support, and she knew that this was important to me.
SPIEGEL: Had she been surprised?
Agassi: Nothing in the book surprises her, except the things that even surprised me.
SPIEGEL: Namely?
Agassi: How contradictory I am. How big my fears really had been in all those years. How a decision led to the next one and how a life becomes meaningful because of this and becomes a story.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SPIEGEL: Steffi Graf was not afraid to be pushed into the limelights again, after years of being outside of the public eye?
Agassi: Nobody can push Stefanie anywhere. She does not go to where she does not want to go. This is one of her characterictics I always was envious of, even before we got to know each other. I wanted to meet this person who was like I wanted to be, who knew herself so well that she never hesitated and never had any doubts.

Thank you so much for your hard work! I really appreciate what you do for us!

I especially like this quote:

I like to do those translations myself, usually it is fun, so it's no problem. But THAT interview really is too long for a complete and accurate translation *LOL*

Re: Steffi Graf Admiration Thread

I feel empty, but I've translated the last page.
Sorry in advance for typos and English mistakes
(S = Spiegel / A = Agassi, yes I know if I hadn't tell you wouldn't have understand )
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A : Nobody can push Stefanie anywhere. She does not go to where she does not want to go. This is one of her characterictics I always was envious of, even before we got to know each other. I wanted to meet this person who was like I wanted to be, who knew herself so well that she never hesitated and never had any doubts.
S : Sounds/seems like a strong woman(=Steffi).
A : Very, very strong. And she had indeed an intense life, similar to mine: high challenges, higher pressure, high expectations worldwide, and the people you care about, all relying on you. She has handled it with dignity, unlike me.
S: How is it to be retired at 39 ?
A: Free. Until today I didn’t neither miss tennis, nor the competiton. I’ve never liked it. I never couldn’t tolerate, the fact that I couldn’t be perfect, I didn’t realise how defeats could hurt. There was no balance: No victory felt as good, as a defeat could hurt. I rather felt like if I have been created, to never be satisfied . I couldn’t escape. The day I’ve retired, was as great as the day I shaved my head.
S: You lost your hair, so that you played for years with a wig…
A : …and I ashamed myself. A professionel athlete, affraid of moving around, because his hair are falling ! Brooke (The Fridge) Shields, my first wife, told me : “Shave your head, your hair are not important.” The release was the same when I retired. Suddenly everything was gone: the pressure, the physical pain. Instead you see your children growing up, while before you hardly noticed it.
S : Is it right ? That during your last years on tour, the things changed : you’ve became highly respected, the US open weeks were “Agassi-madness”.
A : That’s right, and I was able to enthusiastically welcome this. There was this moment, when I begin to make my own choices : I was 27, and I’ve finally had the courage to say stop. It was me to decide : "No I don’t stop now, I keep on playing a couple of years – for myself". Thus everything changed. I founded the School here in Las Vegas and I was also playing for my students, and then tennis gave me Stef, and from then on I played for my wife. So it was worth it, and the dnd was unbelievable sad.
S : Athletes suffer when their body become weaker, when the feeling invincibility feeling fades. There will never again be something, you're such a master at such as at tennis.
A : I don’t think. My school has 620 pupils, I am good at it as at tennis. I think that people have the possibility to change their lives. You can find new directions. I’ve never tought, that tomorrow would be like yesterday.
S: Boris Becker, Michael Jordan, Michael Schumacher - they all had to to fight against comeback-desires.
A : Maybe. I don’t. I’ve never had so much in common with other athletes, I now watch any sports, I don’t go to (sports) events. Even at the time, when the colleagues said : "The center court is my home, I'm sure about that” , I didn’t understand it. For me, every rain breaks meant I sank (sink ?) deeper into my fears, so that I wanted all of the matches to be just behind me. They (the macthes) were hard and nothing else.
S : And Steffi Graf(comeback) ?
A : No comeback-desire, no. We are 40, have 2 children, 8 and 6 years old. It is a blessed, privileged life.
S : How is your relationship to your father today, to a new level ? A reconciliation ?
A : Yes, we’ve talked together about everything. There was a wonderful moment at my last US Open, in 2006. I could hardly walk, the back pain was huge, since a silhouette came out of the darkness, put his arm around me and said to me, that I better should stop, it was enough, he couldn’t bear any longer to see me suffering. It was my dad. For the first I realized he had enough of tennis, that for him the price to pay was to high, at each of my point he felt alive then dead.
S : Do you understand him now ?
A : Yes, sure, he was always proud of me. It’s so easy to understand : He grew up in streets, never had a choice, he wanted to offer his children freedom, by allowing us to live the American dream. For him freedom meant money. As a kid I couldn’t understand that, but when you’re older and think about it again, you think different. He didn’t trust in psychology, but in discipline and work, and also in loyalty and generosity. Today we spend the weekends with the grandparents.
S : There is a sad scene in the book : You are back home, you finally decide to do it, to embrace him, but he remains stiff, he can not do that.
A : It wasn’t something we do, with each other, we have never touched, we have never said "I love you, ". Today, both of us do it.
S : Did he apologize ?
A: He doesn’t think he had to say sorry for something. He is proud, because evrything he did, contributed to make me a champion.
S : Did he read the book ?
A : He won’t read it, he told it to me 2 years ago, last year, and yesterday. He sai that he was here, so he knows everythin that happened. He also says that Tennis is the one who has destroyed our relationship for decades. And not him. Not his decisions. If it was to do again, he would do all the same, change nothing, but today he would make from me a golfer, and for sure I would be the best golfer of the world.
S : After her carreer, your wife wanted to live in New York or San Fransisco. How did you convince Steffi Graf, to live here in Las Vegas ?
A : Her mother is here often, her brother and his 4 kids live here, my family is here. So our life was above all here, that’s why we came back(to Vegas). I would say, she loves me so much. The result is that she loves her life here.
S : M. Agassi, we are thanking you for this interview.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Good night

Edit : my favorite one

I already told several people that I hated tennis, really hated, and all of them tried to talk me out of it: "No, that's not true, Andre, actually you love tennis." Do you know what Stefanie answered: "Don't we all hate it?".

Re: Steffi Graf Admiration Thread

Graf says Agassi asked whether she wanted kids on first date!

After a glittering tennis career, Andre Agassi went home to Las Vegas to live with his wife Steffi Graf. They’ve been married now for nine years.

Recalling their courtship after both had won the French Open in 1999, Steffi says that on their first date, Agassi asked whether she wanted children.

“He was also asking me if I wanted to have children in the first date,” Graf said, and Agassi said: “Well, close.”

“When Stefanie came into my life, I realized that tennis gave me her, you know. The scorecard was gettin’ more balanced, you know. It gave me my school. It gave me… Stef, you know. And just that weight alone, you know, gave me a lotta wind under my sail,” says Agassi.

Agassi told CBS that it gave him a reason to appreciate tennis.

please can someone put that interview on youtube.I can´t watch the show here in germany
Oh don't worry I am sure we will find it somewhere on the web like the official website http://www.cbs.com/late_night/late_show/
Andre will be in Europe, Paris, Berlin, among others from dec. 7., as the book here in Europe will be released on December 10.

The 60 minutes interview is already on youtube and the official site, I didn't watch it yet : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XB6m1UFkLv4 and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5TCzvkVy6g

And Kate Walsh should never have left Grey's Anatomy !!! I adored Adisson.
