Thanks Irma that was such a long but a good read

It's like tu in france. In Germany it's normal to speak to each other in the Sie form because it's more polite. I guess it's same in France
We have different words in the Netherlands too (jij en u), but we say "jij" more easier then Germans say "du". At least that's what I believe.

For the SIE form it's only using the Last Name, you don't use the first name, that's not polite in Germany. It's more like Hello Ms Graf. That said it is normal that you speak to children with their first name, so you are using the DU form. Re: Steffi Graf Admiration Thread
Yes "Du" is like the french "Tu", you use "Du" when you know the person you are talking to, a friend, a collegue, etc..., whatever their age, you also use it when you're talking to someone young : kids, teeangers.
But if you don't know the person, if you're talking to an adult, or someone older than you, you say "vous" ("Sie"), except if the person allowed you to tell him "Tu". So in those case it's impolite to say "Du" (Tu), if the person didn't allow you.
God how complicated are German and French languages
I was reading an old interview (1987), in which the interviewer was talking about Steffi trashing opponents on court, he asked if sometimes she didn't have pity to baggel them for exemple and then her dad interrupted and said :
"What you want her to do ? Lose games deliberately? She already did it !...
- You already did it ?
- (confused)Euh yes, no, sometimes, but afterwards they realized it, and then they ask "why did you do that?", but well...no, it's not that I let them winning games, it's because as I am leading I can try new shots, so."

I think it's even more complicated here because it became so combined with the personal attitude of a person
Some are upset when you say "U" because it creates some sort of distance, and others are upset because they think "jij" is impolite.
And my chef by example comes from a village where "U" doesn't even excist in their dialect, because it was infiltrated with the English language since the fishers had to deal with them all the time on the sea.
Some people also feel that children should say "U" to their parents. But that doesn't happen very often anymore.

Re: Steffi Graf Admiration Thread
Cirstea interview for TennisWeek, I think she's definitly a fan and very lucky too :
http://www.tennisweek.com/news/fulls...newsid=6638788
Quote:
Sorana Cirstea prepared for the US Open by hitting with a pair of former US Open champions: Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf, her tennis idol.
"By Richard Pagliaro
Tuesday, September 01, 2009
I was hitting with Andre before Stanford, LA and Cincinnati and I hit with Steffi before Indian Wells," Cirstea said. "Steffi came two times and hit with me and it really helped me a lot."
(...)
Tennis Week: How has that training helped your development? Have you hit with Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf in Vegas?
Sorana Cirstea: Since I got to start working with the team my game has changed completely. I think my mental (game) has changed more than my physical game. I love Vegas — it's my favorite place. I had the honor to hit with Steffi and Andre and just to be out there on the court hitting with them meant so much to me. I was hitting with Andre before Stanford, LA and Cincinnati and I hit with Steffi before Indian Wells. Steffi came two times and hit with me and it really helped me a lot.
Tennis Week: You've said Steffi was your tennis hero growing up. What influence did Steffi have on you? Where is your primary training base?
Sorana Cirstea: Because of Steffi I started playing tennis. I saw her playing on TV and I told my parents I want to be like her. Just to meet her and spend some time with her was a dream come true for me. I have been practicing in Vegas and Amsterdam — depends on where I am.

Kim for Die Welt (German) :
http://www.welt.de/sport/article4440...sse-Hilfe.html
Quote:
Tennis
Steffi Graf war für Kim Clijsters eine große Hilfe
(2)
Von Jörg Allmeroth 1. September 2009

Re: Steffi Graf Admiration Thread
Umm, not sure if this has already been posted or whatever but Steffi is going to be in New York doing some charity/tennis clinic type thing where you can apparently meet her, watch her do some tennis stuff etc.
