Tennis darling wins US Open warm-up
Denmark’s top female tennis player finds form leading into the year’s last grand slam tournament
Caroline Wozniacki has recaptured her form, winning the Pilot Pen Tennis tournament in New Haven, Connecticut, beating Elena Vesnina in the final.
Wozniacki’s 6-2, 6-4 drubbing of the Russian was her second straight Pilot Pen victory, making her the tournament’s first repeat champion since Venus Williams who won in 2001 and 2002.
Her form hadn’t been good prior to the New Haven tournament, with opening round exits in two of her last three tournaments.
The win was a good warm-up for the US Open, which begins today in New York, Wozniacki told B.T. newspaper.
‘I’m definitely not a favorite to win the US Open – Safina, the Williams sisters and Dementieva are,’ she said. ‘But don’t write me off. New Haven’s given me back my confidence.’
Wozniacki is seeded 9th for the tournament and faces 87th-ranked Galina Voskoboeva in the first round.
