I don’t understand why in the rankings Maria has 13 tournaments when everybody knows that Toronto is only the 6th.
Also in The Race to the Championships Maria have 12 tournaments. I can’t understand.

The Manditory events and Slams count on her overall ranking even if she didnt play them.

Well, I do not understand\like the new ranking system and the rules either.They are lame and it seems to me that they are not working in the proper way but the players must deal with it no matter they like it or not.

She has to play
4 Grand Slams. Missed 1.
4 Premier Mandatory: Missed 3
4 out of 5 Premier 5: missed 2.
so she missed 6 tourneys and got 0 for them for this years race. 6 + 6 = 12 tourneys for the race.
She missed last years YEC, so 6 + 6 + 1 = 13 tourneys for the 52 week rankings.

It makes sense in a best of 16 system. She will get six zeroes in her best 16 results. She won't be able to compensate that loss by playing other tourneys.

Right now she actually has two missed GS since she also couldn't play US Open 2008.

To be honest, I'd really rather have her unseeded than be seeded below #24, because below #24 will mean she'll meet a top 1-8 player by the third round. If she wins Toronto, she'll be around #22 and that means no top 1-8 player by the third round. So being unseeded, in my opinion, is a better risk of a good draw than being seeded below #24 (unless she wins Toronto and gets the #22 seed, then that's fine with me).
