You can feel that way without joining the Maria Mafia and becoming an eternal follower of the Golden Girl, you attention seeker.

I don't know about the rest of you, but actually I do. My kids do it all of the time!!!!!!!!!!
Have I said things that I regret -- of course. Have I paid the price at times? You bet again. At times, I've deserved the fallout.
Do I feel that people can change or grow up and learn from things that they've said that are offensive or in bad taste? Absolutely. But that doens't mean I will trust a person who has said something vile, hateful, or prejudiced.
Also, I used to do work in the t'ainment biz, and there were things that I would NEVER EVER IN THIS LIFETIME say or repeat around co-workers or in a work situation, or I'd never work again! LITERALLY!!!! Those were the rules in that business.
Knowing when to watch your month is especially important when you KNOW you're a public figure -- whether you asked for it or not -- in public or private. Just ask Alec Baldwin!
Martina Hingis put it very well:
"I did things I should not have done. But people make mistakes, especially at my age, when you feel you are so smart, but in fact you are an a**hole!"

I can't understand athletes helping their opponents this way. It happens in all sports too. All commenting on an opponent does is motivate them for payback or to prove you wrong. The best thing to do is say, "We'll see what happens when we play."

I remember hingis saying this, and look at what happened in history, Martina retired soon after that, I guess she couldn't believe her eyes - and her feet.

I remember this too and I was wondering how in the world she could make 12 DF after that.

I guess she jinxed Graf and now we all know she's one of a kind!
My contribution would be Martina's line call in RG99, although she was correct, i don't think it was smart to give the crowd a real reason to hate on her. She could have been more composed, kept her point and could have rallied on for the title. But of course if you were cocky Martina Hingis during that age of hers you couldn't ask for anything else from her.
p.s. oops somebody already said what i said, a lot shorter:

Well, I guess the idea behind trash talk is to psych your opponent out. Of course it can backfire, and it frequently does. But Muhammad Ali said that he always wanted to get so much under the skin of his opponents that they would lose their cool in the ring and fight in anger, and when that happened they made mistakes which he could exploit.
Don't know how it works in tennis, but the idea of getting a psychological edge is probably the same. Difference is that (in contrast with boxing) these players play each other on a regular basis, so the element of surprise isn't there. Players know from past experience what to expect and if they can or can't deal with what the other player has to offer. It's difficult to intimidate someone you've played ten times already.

Exactly, and if it had been the other way around the crowd would have booed the linesman and the umpire, NOT Steffi. And if it had been Steffi with that underhanded serve (which by the way is a perfectly LEGAL shot) they would have APPLAUDED her, just like they did with Michael Chang 10 years earlier.

Well if you want to point out minor mistakes...............................
And thanks for the bad rep btw. It's always nice to see people who can, and can't, take it.
