Bookies have Smith as the 1-2 betting favorite at the start. Her opening match on Centre Court as the defending champ did nothing to change that, as she knocked off volleys "like clay pigeons in a shooting match". Bueno also won easily on "Ladies Day". 1962 champ Susman followed on Centre-having gottem married and a mom in the two-year interval. The rain and Russian Anna Dmitrieva "who has learned to put away a volley", give her fits. The first set ends dramtically-an ace, a double fault, and a footfault "on what was certainly as ace"-then another double for the set. The match was called due to darkness after Karen fell headfirst sliding towards the net.
Rain dampened the women's fashions a bit on Ladies Day. Nothing could hold back Lea Pericoli though, as she paraded about in a Ted Tinling dress that had 300 swan feathers!
The next day Susman broke at 5-5 in the third-next up for her is Mighty Margaret. Billie Jean Moffitt, who has enchanted the Brits with her outgoing personality, was happy to talk to reporters about her perceived flaws after Italian language student Roberta Beltrame gave her a scare with soft ball tactics.
Smith-Susman was a magnificent encounter on Centre. Susman "playing like a demon", opened up a 3-1 lead. Smith broke back to 3-3, with serve holds the rest of the way until Margaret broke at 10-9 on a Susman double fault and a volley error. The second looked to stay close early on too until Smith won a critical game of 8 deuces to break in the second game. After that game Karen's game collapsed-final score 11-9 6-0.
On the other side of the draw Billie Jean "was pat-balled into near panic by a London typist, Margaret Lee, before she won 3-6 6-4 6-2."
"She drove me crazy with all that slow stuff. I'm used to slugging it out with power hitters like Nancy Richey", said the bespeckled American.
