Let's hear it for Tereza! She's 17 years old (born in November 1990). According to her ITF file, she was born in Pula but lives in Porec.
She reached her highest rank so far in May 2007, at #738. After that she didn't play for almost a year, until April of this yar (school?) so she lost her ranking.
She's now back in action and seems to be playing well. Last month, she reached the SF at the $10K in Mostar and the final at the $10K in Budva. This week, she's playing at the $10K in Torino. She qualified easily, winning both her qualie matches 60 60. The best part is that yesterday in the main draw, she won her first-round match against the #2 seed, Maria Irigoyen (#251 in the world), very easily: 61 61. Very impressive! Given that result, her next match, against Nancy Rustignoli (#819; never heard of her), should be very winnable.
With her first-round win yesterday, she'll be able to re-enter the rankings at around 860. Hopefully she'll keep winning this week and move up even higher than that.
Well, after roughly two and a half hours on court we have to say that the better player won. She may not have had better stats in all aspects of the game, but she showed more consistency and the ability to repeatedly string a series of games together which eventually brought Kovinic to a 6:4, 3:6, 6:2 victory. Still a nice showing by Tereza and a positive sign for the weeks to come, not to mention for the next season.
If anyone wants to watch, QR2 of WTA Nanjing will be streamed tomorrow, starting from 6 AM CET, and Tereza's match is first on the program on the Center court, starting an hour earlier. Still hope the stream will cover her entire match.
EDIT: the time difference is probably due to the start of the winter time (at least in Europe).
- pretty much couldn't have gotten a better R1 draw. Alla is not just in a bad form, she lost to Tereza in Moscow qualies this year in three. Make the most of this Tereza!
Good luck, Tereza! A win would be worth 22 points (in addition to the 6 she already has for qualifying). That's not too shabby for someone with her ranking.
No streaming after all, Tereza playing very good so far (or Alla is playing really bad, not sure as I don't see what's going on). She made it to a break point in the first service game of Alla, but didn't convert, then served herself to love and got to deuce on the next service game of her opponent. In the 4th game Tereza again strung 3 points in a row but then lost her first one on serve, only to finish it off with the next one. Keep up the good work Tereza!
Kudryavtseva totally dominating the start of the second set, first she served a love service game, then broke Tereza's serve to 30 and then held another comfortable service game to 15. By far the worst of Tereza's stats today is her 2nd serve conversion, which is at just 14%, although I'm not sure these stats are totally accurate. Still, it looks bad and I don't see how Tereza can get herself out of this mess. Too bad, it looked like such a nice chance.
Kudryavtseva goes through with a bagel in the second set. In the final three games Tereza took just 3 points, all in her two service games. She made a total of 5 double faults in the second set, after only firing one in the first, which is indicative, hopefully not suggesting some sort of injury, although that would at least explain this performance. The match lasted only 70 minutes.
Ajla adds to what has been a wonderful day so far for Croatian players with a 6:4, 6:1 loss to world's #325 Chin-Wei Chan. Sure, this girl was 152 at one point, but she is clearly way out of form and Tereza still couldn't have even won a set.
