Draw notes:

Mixed Doubles: 3rd seeded team [?] withdrew replayed by alternates: O'Neill/Kratzmann

--------------------------------------------------
Summary:

Steffi Graf continues her unstoppable run of Slams, taking her 5th consecutive major at Flinders Park. Utterly dominat from round one, she double-bageled Simpson in the 2R, dropping 25 points in total. In the other half a vulnerable Martina Navratilova fended off a set point in the second set vs Jenny Byrne.

The next round is more comfortable for the former world #1. She praised the facility after playing inside the roof. "It's the best indoor arena in the world. Visibility is great. I wish all the matches were indoors."

Hana Mandliova, 1987 champ, continued to struggle. She saved 3 match points in topping Bollegraf 9-7 in the third. The gig was up for her in the 4R vs Martina. Hana double faulted 9 times and lost serve 5 times in all to tamely go down. "I knew I had to serve well because she was going to come to the net and put pressure on me. I just didn't do it."

Lindqvist put out #4 seed Sheriver early and then fell victim herslef to Kiwi Belinda Cordwell in the quarters. Cordwell hadn't made a semi in all of 1988. "I'll be in fairly respectable company", she said, "but I'm playing well and deserve to be there."

The next shocker was Sukova-Navratilova. Helena rarely beats Martina (her record is 3-25 coming in to this match), but when she does it is often on big a big stage like this. The match had shades of their 1984 semi, when Sukova denied Navratilova the Grand Slam. This year Martina served for the match twice, being broken both times with sizzling backhand winners from the gangly challenger. Sadly the dramtic match ended with a double fault.

Expectations ran high for at least a close match as doubles partners Sabatini and Graf came on court. Steffi quickly snuffed out Gaby's hopes, destroying her with a vaporizing forehand. After 2-2 Steffi lost only 14 more points the entire way. "I wanted to win badly", Steffi said later, :and she didn't seem to be physically there. I played well and she was not at her best. She wasn't moving as well as she can."

Sabatini declared that Sukova had no hope in the finals. Earlier the Czech clamed down her erring backhand to get by in 3 sets.

Sabatini was proven right, but at least Sukova put up a fight. In 100 degree heat she kept Graf on court for 71 minutes and 20 games, both the longest Steffi had to be on court the whole event.

Martina Navratilova and Pam Shriver won their seventh consecutive AO doubles title. Their victory was a tournament record for a pair, made Navratilova the winner of most Aussie women’s doubles titles, and was their last major title together, the duo splitting before the US Open
