By a trick of the calendar no Aussie Open is held in 1986. The gap is caused by moving the event from late in the year back to its old time slot in early January. Two Australian Opens were held in calendar year 1977, making up for "the one that got away". To make the season more managable and create a big event in the fall the WTA moved the tour final ahead from March to November. Thus, while no Aussie Open was held in 1986, there were two Virginia Slims tour championships.
