Pro Career

In mid 1926 Suzanne signed a professional contract with Charles ("Cash and Carry") Pyle for 50,000 US dollars, plus a percentage of any profits. She thus became the first big time female pro.

She arrived in New York with 10 trunks and 12 racquets.
Her foil was the US star Mary K. Browne, a full 8 years older than Suzanne and past her prime. Mary was said to have signed for the sum of $30,000.

She was formally expelled by the French Federation after her first pro match. After New York crowds ranged anywhere from 500 to 10,000.

American Pro Tour Summary:

There were 40 separate dates in all. Most featured Suzanne in a singles and mixed match, though at times the singles was omitted, and on a couple of occassions Suzanne and a male partner faced two males.

Singles: 34 matches won-2 lost (.944%)

Lenglen's only losses were in Portland (she retired after winning the first set) and Hartford. She also dropped a set in Tampa.Suzanne never lost a fully contested 2 out of 3 set match on the tour in singles.

Mixed: 25 matches won -8 lost and 1 match unfinished (in Witchita) (.757%)

The tour wasn't a raging success, but Pyle reportedly did make $80,000, while Lenglen earned an extra $25,000 in addition to her guarentee, while Browne netted $25,000.

Suzanne left for France on Feb 19, 1927

July 5 at London (3,500) d. Koring 6-3 6-0

The last 3 matches were outdoors in football stadiums, a green wood court laid out over the grass.

There were rumours over the years that she was planning to appeal to the Federation so her amatuer status could be restored, but she denied all the conjecture as Helen Wills set about racking up championships. Perhaps to slow down 'Queen Helen' Suzanne personally showed Helen Jacobs how to beat her great rival with a combination of of long and short alternating balls.
