Re: Other Greek Players

Highlights since the last post:

Despoina Vogasari won a 10K in Egypt in June, dropping only one set along the way. In the same tournament, she reached the doubles semis with Eleni Kordolaimi. The following week, Despoina played another 10K in Egypt and reached the singles semis where she lost 6-4 in the third to the eventual champion (after taking the first set 6-0) . She then began her college career as a freshman at the University of Houston. During this time, she will also compete in ITF tournaments. For example, she competed in a 50K in the U.S. in October where she put up a good fight in the first round against #4 seed American Maria Sanchez (then #145) but lost 2-6 5-7. Good scoreline though

Eleni Kordolaimi played four 10K tournaments in Egypt in June-July. In singles, she qualified for the first tournament and lost to the eventual winner in the quarterfinals. For the second tournament, she qualified and reached the second round. For the third tournament, she got a wildcard and lost in the quarterfinals to the eventual champion. In the fourth tournament, she lost 7-6 in the third in the quarterfinals. She also played doubles at all these events, with her results being two semifinals and two quarterfinals

Agni Stefanou lost 6 matches in a row and looked hopeless. She took a month off, and then showed a tremendous amount of improvement playing a 10K in Turkey in June where she had a nice run to the final (beating a top 500 player and #2 seed along the way), before losing to top-seeded Miyabi Inoue of Japan (#354), 3-6 4-6 . She then played three more 10K's in Turkey. Following a disappointing R2 loss 6-4 in the third in the next one, she bounced back to reach the semis the following week. She won 7-5 6-2 over (4) Julia Stamatova of Bulgaria (#542). She lost the semi to (2) Basak Eraydin of Turkey (#294) 6-7(6) 2-6. Although she probably wasted many set points based on the scoreline, the fact that she was giving a top 300 player a run for her money in that first set shows Agni's potential. In the final tournament, she lost to the #2 seed in the quarterfinals
