* From "Pastime": August 21, 1895: "The tie took place on Saturday morning, and both in the stands and in the half-circle, where the spectators sit on the other side, every available inch was crowded. A more enthusiastic crowd has hardly ever been seen at a tennis tournament, but it needs must be said that apparently they gave more applause to Miss Jackson's winning aces than to Mrs Hillyard's. Why this should be so it is hard to say, as a more sportsmanlike – or shall we say more sportswomanlike – action than Mrs Hillyard's – the holder of the cup – in inviting Miss Jackson to stay with her during the tournament, and chaperone her for the week, it would be hard to find. If Miss Jackson had not been playing at the meeting, the Duke of Devonshire's Cup would have been Mrs Hillyard's own property, as she would have most certainly won it for the third year in succession."
