Well, if they wanted only as much they'd probably stay in their own countries and at least save on the flight tickets. Many old EU countries depend on this workforce, especially when it comes to certain industries (in particular the ones where manual labour is involved).
Migrant workers can feed themselves most of the time. It's a lot worse when it comes to layabouts taking advantage of a still generous social system. People who never worked and never intended to do so...
