Week of June 6-12

June 10-11 Wightman Cup London, England, UK (Grass)
Venue: The All-England Club, Wimbledon (on Court 1)

Great Britain d United States 4-3

US Captain: Janet Hopps

First Day (June 10)

Ann Haydon d Karen Hantze (US) 2-6 11-9 6-1
Darlene Hard (US) d Christine Truman 4-6 6-3 6-4
Karen Hantze/Darlene Hard (US) d Ann Haydon/Angela Mortimer 6-0 6-0

Second Day (June 11)

Christine Truman d Karen Hantze (US) 7-5 6-3
Darlene Hard (US) d Ann Haydon 5-7 6-2 6-1
Angela Mortimer d Janet Hopps (US) 6-8 6-4 6-1
Shirley Brasher/Christine Truman d Janet Hopps/Dottie Knode (US) 6-4 9-7

On opening day before 5,000 the Americans dashed Britsh hopes for an early lead. Ann Haydon did her part in defeating volleyer Karen Hantze, but Darlene Hard showed her mettle in clipping Truman. Even the partisan crowd wildly clapped as "the bouncy, seemingly nerveless" blonde pulled out a series of stunning half volley winners from her bag of tricks. At 4-4 in the third a costly Truman double fault gives Hard the vital brreak.

Day 1 ended with a double bagel meted out by Hantze and Hard silenced the crowd and gave the US a 2-1 lead.

Day two saw Chrsitine even matters at 2 all, but once again Darlene Hard, who ended tghe series 3 and 0, put the US ahead again.

Mortimer looked beaten at 2-4 15-30 on Hopps serve, then staged a comeback to keep British hopes alive and tie the series at 3 apiece. Poor Janet was suffering from leg cramps in the third and put up little resistance.

That left only the deciding doubles. Hopps showed no signs of open fatigue after her cramps, but one wonders if it was a wise choice to play her.The Yanks won the first 5 games and then collapsed. The US Also had their chances in the second, but failed at set point amid exciting rat a tat volleying exchanges. Most of the 5,000 specatators on day two stayed past 8 PM top see Britain clinch the Cup.
