Update
The tournament which became the West Sussex Championships was first held in Chichester in that county circa 1890. However, there was no non-handicap singles event for women until the late 1890s.
The West Sussex Championships tournament was discontinued in 1912, but was successfully revived in 1924; it was held in Bognor Regis from that year until its demise circa 1978.
