NEW HAVEN OPEN: Driving around the tennis stars
NEW HAVEN — Grocery shopping with Monica Seles. Picking up Caroline Wozniacki and Rory McIlroy at Tweed Airport or driving down to Manhattan to pick up a special pair of sneakers.
Those are just a few of the interesting stories of a volunteer driver at the New Haven Open.
Do they have the best volunteer job at the tournament? Maybe. But there is no debating they have some pretty interesting anecdotes.
The Register took a ride with Andrea Petkovic to the Omni Hotel following her 6-3, 5-7,7-5 opening-round win Monday night. It was her first victory since April, as she made her return to the court from an ankle injury.
Needless to say, there was plenty celebration in the van on the way. Petkovic traveled with her father, boyfriend, physical therapist and coach. Together, they sang Serbian songs and clapped. They also sang a couple of American songs like “That’s the Way I Like it,” and “Hit the Road Jack.”
They chatted with driver Wanda DeBreaux about Yale and New Haven pizza.
