A player who enjoyed success in tournaments in California in the years immediately before World War One was always referred to in contemporary sources as "Mrs H.(A.) Niemeyer". Her tournament wins include the singles title at the Pacific Coast Championships, held in San Diego in 1914. This player's real name was Tilla L. Menz. She was born in June 1877. She married Harold Albert Niemeyer, a physician, in January 1898. It appears that the marriage did not last, and that the couple were separated or Tilla Menz died circa 1915, but it has not been possible to verify exactly what happened.
