Looking back, King said, "I wasted 1976. After watching Chris Evert and Evonne [Goolagong] Cawley play the final at Wimbledon, I asked myself what I was doing. So, despite my age and the operations, the Old Lady came back [in 1977]...."

King played 6 matches in 26 hours and won all 20 of her sets to lead the United States to the Fed Cup title. After Kerry Melville Reid defeated Rosemary Casals in the first rubber of the final, King defeated Evonne Goolagong Cawley in 81 minutes in the singles and then teamed with Casals to win the tie and the title. King was forced to play singles when Chris Evert was unable to play because of a tendon injury in her right hand.

King and Phil Dent saved a match point at 4-5 in the third set before winning the last 3 games of the final. This was only the third time in US Open history that a mixed doubles championship team had saved a match point at some time during the tournament.

King qualified for the singles by winning 5 singles matches at the Federation Cup earlier in the year.

King had right knee surgery on November 9. The surgeon, Dr. Donald Larson at Pacific Hospital in Long Beach, California, described her injury as a "worn area on the kneecap and underlying bone" and "not the usual cartilage removal." He said it was an "occupational hazard" of professional athletes.
