Wimbledon 2011: Andrew's first-round TV-report (Part 2)

=================
THE CHAMPIONSHIPS (Wimbledon, London, England; grass; Major)
=================---------------------------
First-round TV-report: Rybáriková v Azarenka (Part 2: Tuesday 21st June 2011)
--------------------------------------------

- Magdaléna Rybáriková [EF] lt. VICTORIA AZARENKA [4,DF], 4-6 2-3 (Deuce #1) retired (left-knee injury)

Magda only played one point on Tuesday, as she did the splits in the middle of the baseline, and injured her left knee so badly that she was grimacing in pain and couldn’t even walk properly. I pray to Almighty God, to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and to all the angels and saints in Heaven, that this injury will not force Magda to end her career.

Technically, Magda is now 0:4 in main-draw Women’s Singles matches at Wimbledon. It’s hard to believe that that statistic belongs to the player who was runner-up in the Girls’ Singles at Wimbledon 2006 and won Birmingham 2009, but she’s had a series of increasingly tough opponents in first rounds at Wimbledon: Monica Niculescu, Roberta Vinci, Aravane Rezaď and Victoria Azarenka.

Second set
----------
RYBÁRIKO _*_*_ 2 retired
AZARENKA *_*_* 3

Rybáriková serving 2-3: 40/30 (GP #1). The match was suspended due to rain at 17:03 BST on Monday (second set so far 28m, match so far 1h13m). The match resumed at 16:35 on Tuesday (23h39m rain-delay) – second on Court 2, following the 3h56m Verdasco v Štěpánek marathon. Second serve... Azarenka hit a crosscourt backhand winner while Magda had a nasty slip in the middle of the baseline, hurt her left knee, and stayed on the ground for several seconds, grimacing in pain. She got up, hobbled to her chair, and put an ice-pack on her knee. The trainer arrived after several minutes, and evaluated Magda’s knee as she lay on her back on a towel. Deuce #1. Magda hobbled to the net to shake hands with Azarenka, who looked very sympathetic. Azarenka won 6-4 3-2 (Rybáriková retired with a left-knee injury) at 16:42 BST (second set 24h07m gross, 35m net; match 24h52m gross, 1h20m net).
