The Pac Coast is actually older, dating from 1890. Once the Pacific SW started in 1927 though it quickly became the bigger event because of its director Perry Jones, who cleverly tied it in with Hollywood. The movie stars came to see the tennis stars and vice versa. The other big advantage was the calendar, as the SW came first.

The Pac Coast was still a big event though. Winners in the 40s included
Osborne (1941-2,44, 46-7) Brough (43) Betz (45) and Hart (49).
Even 48 winner Gussie Moran was quality.
