Re: Players Who "Qualified" For Singapore 1500/Zhuhai 750 That May Not Play

Peng is a whole lot closer to the standard of the other players in the tournament than Pironkova ever was.

I don't think there should be wildcards for this event, but there have been, ever since...

Re: Maria Sharapova: 'Me and Serena Williams have many seasons ahead of us'

"Do you want to play again with Serena Williams?"

Ah, she was not obsessing about Serena, she was giving a politician's evasive non-answer to an awkward question.

Fair enough, really, of...

Re: Evert: Serena will not have an easy comeback

Dunno about the level going up, but for sure, it's a big ask for a 36 year-old woman, who had a complicated delivery, to come back and win a slam 4 or 5 months later.

Even when it's Serena.

Re: Prague in serious talks to host WTA finals after Singapore

I could really enjoy a long weekend in Prague.

I agree with the posters bemoaning the lack of UK tournaments beyond the south east and Midlands. I'm a southerner myself, but with Scottish...

Re: Race to Singapore: 6 Players in Strong Contention for YE no.1

What International? As far as I can see, it's 2 semis and the USO in singles, after first round losses in Wimby and Washington. And now she has notched up another first round loss.

Sloane had a...

Re: Race to Singapore: 6 Players in Strong Contention for YE no.1

I don't think there is an exceptionally strong case for giving Sloane a WC. She hasn't proven herself as a consistent top 8 performer.

If it was someone like Clijsters, or if Azarenka or Kvitova...

Re: Wuhan R1: Wang def. (14) Stephens 6-2 6-2

The day's rest doesn't make any difference if you lose in R1.

Re: Sharapova: Serena and I - we are not friends

It reminds me of when 6' 2" Davenport complained that playing 5' 9" Mauresmo was "like playing a guy". In that case, the spectre of homophobia loomed over the comments, in this case, it's racism.

Re: Sharapova: Serena and I - we are not friends

Fortunately for Maria, she has no shame.

Talking about Serena so much and in such terms makes her look somewhat pitiful, but the whole risible soap opera will probably help to shift copy, so,...

Re: Serena is in labor! UPDATE: Serena gives birth to baby girl!

Happy and a bit relieved to see this.

Hope everything goes smoothly for them from this point onwards.

Re: Is it fair for Tokyo to host two tournaments in back to back weeks at the same ve

Rather than fairness, I think the real question is, is it practical for a venue to hold back-to-back tournaments?

Most of the time, the answer is probably no. It would dilute the interest in each...

Re: Can Under Armour be as big as Nike and Adidas in the WTA?

Sloane's dress was pretty, and she looked great in it. I think she won best-dressed player, as well as the tournament.

Re: Should USO Champ Sloane (& RG Champ Jelena) Get WC To Singapore YEC 1500 ???

If Azarenka had played and won USO, or if Kvitova had won it I think they would have a stronger case than Sloane. They were both multiple slam winners in the past, with Azarenka a former #1, and...

Re: Welcome to the Top 10 Jelena Ostapenko!

Her year as a whole clearly deserves it.

This year's slam winners will be ranked 1, 10, 17 and 22. I can't remember a time when the average rank of the slam winners was so low.

Runners up at 2,...

Re: Tales from the Locker Room - Episode 94 The Next Big Thing

19-year-old Fed may have gone out R3 in 2000 (to 20-year-old Ferrero), but the young guns did pretty well - 20-year-olds Marat Safin and Venus Williams won the singles titles, and 19-year-old Hewitt...

Re: USO 2017 stops first time GS SF streak at 17 - Record stands until at least RG 20

Ironic that it ends at the tournament which gives us the first Open Era slam semifinal line-up with no top-8 players.

You'd think that would enhance the chance of debutants coming through.

Re: USO R4 : (16) Anastasija Sevastova def. (WC) Maria Sharapova 5-7 6-4 6-2

Nowhere do I assume that the rate in tennis is the same as athletics. Nor do I assume that the rates in different athletic specialities are the same.

However, the labs conducting the tests are...

Re: USO R4 : (16) Anastasija Sevastova def. (WC) Maria Sharapova 5-7 6-4 6-2

It's wilful stupidity to think that the detection rate in tennis would be higher than in other sports.

Re: USO R4 : (16) Anastasija Sevastova def. (WC) Maria Sharapova 5-7 6-4 6-2

Come off it. They do regular testing in athletics too, and catch 1-2% of competitors. The estimated prevalence of intentional doping in athletics is around 44%...
