Re: Serena and the Elo Rating System

It's not funny. Nor is it funny that you said "ELO doesn't lie", when in fact it's Elo (named after the professor), and is a statistical model with flaws and assumptions that can be challenged...

Re: Statistical analysis site FiveThirtyEight weighs in on Serena and era strength de

Fair enough. I agree with you that the article does have value. I just think that it's dangerous, particularly on a board with the sorts of polarities that TF has, to include stats without any...

Re: Statistical analysis site FiveThirtyEight weighs in on Serena and era strength de

I think, generally, when you post statistics and a conclusion without comment, it's not unreasonable to suppose that you concur with the conclusion. You say that you think the analysis is "broadly"...

Re: Statistical analysis site FiveThirtyEight weighs in on Serena and era strength de

I'm guessing many people on here haven't heard of the Elo rating system.

It was initially designed as a chess rating system (meant to evaluate the relative strength of a player), but was...

The U.S. Open Women's Single's Final has sold out before the Men's

You know why: Serena Williams.

First time in U.S. Open history - http://espn.go.com/tennis/usopen15/story/_/id/13526912/us-open-powered-serena-williams-women-final-sells-men-first

Re: Nike launches biggest tennis collection ever: the "Greatness Collection"

Does it matter what that poster thinks? This is the biggest tennis collection EVER, and great news for women's tennis. Big news for Serena, Nike, and the WTA.

Nike launches biggest tennis collection ever: the "Greatness Collection"

On Thursday, August 27, 2015, Nike is launching its biggest tennis collection ever, the "Greatness Collection" in celebration of Serena Williams.

According to the New York Times, Mark Parker, the...

Re: Nike family picture... disrespectful?

This Nike Tennis photo isn't relevant to anything. Hard to believe anyone is even focused on it.

Here's some perspective:

Serena landed the National Cover of Sports Illustrated, the cover of...

Re: So how DOES Sharapova beat Serena tomorrow?

Agree 100%. The idea that Sharapova is feeling no pressure is ludicrous. Watson felt no pressure. Sharapova is feeling pressure for sure; she is a former Wimby champion and is desperate to beat...

Re: Wimbledon R3: Serena Williams def. Heather Watson 6-2 | 4-6 | 7-5

You could be right. But the BBC is already touting Heather as a top-10 player, which is ridiculous. The pressure is coming, for sure. Especially given that Robson isn't back in form yet.

Re: Wimbledon R3: Serena Williams def. Heather Watson 6-2 | 4-6 | 7-5

But can Watson compete at a high level consistently? Not too sure about that.

Stephens beat Serena at AO13--what's her level now?

Halep beat Serena once at YEC14--how is she doing these days?

Re: Wimbledon R3: Serena Williams def. Heather Watson 6-2 | 4-6 | 7-5

Yep. Watson knew it was her only shot at staying in the match. It worked up until 4-5 in the third, when the crowd went too far. At which point, Serena reeled of 3 straight games. :hearts: So glad...

Re: Wimbledon R3: Serena Williams def. Heather Watson 6-2 | 4-6 | 7-5

At 4-5 in the third (Watson about to serve for the match), a few in the crowd booed Serena while she was talking to the umpire. Serena turned towards them, wagged her index finger, and said "Don't...

No, she no longer has the foot speed to win Wimbledon.

Re: Is this the year Serena wins the Calendar Grand Slam?

I think it's mostly nerves. She did something similar at the AO. Lost the first set to Svitolina (3R), and to Muguruza (4R), but pulled it together and beat Cibulkova (QF), Keys (SF), and Maria (F)...

Re: RG R16 : [1] Serena 'Ihazlotzoflivez-Illiams' blocks Sloane Hyphens 1-6 7-5 6-3

No, sometimes Serena beats Stephens easily in straights, like at the 2014 USO. I wouldn't put too much stock in Indian Wells, since Serena was an emotional wreck and struggled alot there, even...

Re: Roland Garros 3R: (1) Serena Williams def. (27) Victoria Azarenka 3-6 6-4 6-2

Nice work, Serena! Winning 10 out of the last 12 games :hearts:

Was the umpires' request to replay the point is something new? It seems like pretty much any competitive tennis match I watch (ATP...

Re: WWW French Open R3: (1) Serena Williams vs (27) Victoria Azarenka ??

I went and looked at the numbers from the Madrid match. Vika had 20W and 38UEs. She served well for much of the match, but those numbers are abysmal--almost 2 to 1 ratio of errors to winners. She was...

Re: Stosur: Sharapova is no Rafa here

Rafa has lost 1 match at Roland Garros in the last 10 years.

No one has anything close to that level of dominance at a slam.

(Martina is the closest with 9 Wimbledons, but even she won them...

Re: Madrid R3 : (1) S.Williams accepts Azarenka's EPIC CHOKE 7-6(5) 3-6 7-6(1) saves

Vika with 20 winners and 38 UE. And people think this match was close because of Vika's play?

Yeah, with a 2:1 UE to winners ratio. The desperation.

Also: LOVE that Serena basically...

Re: Madrid R3 : (1) S.Williams accepts Azarenka's EPIC CHOKE 7-6(5) 3-6 7-6(1) saves

The other thing is that everyone knows that Serena plays poorly when she feels emotionally compromised. Look at her first round match vs. Niculescu at Indian Wells. Serena was an emotional wreck. And...

Re: Madrid R3 : (1) S.Williams accepts Azarenka's EPIC CHOKE 7-6(5) 3-6 7-6(1) saves

It wasn't just Azarenka's misses. She was in that match thanks to Serena's 50+ unforced errors. It's not like Serena is the only one who benefited from her opponent's mistakes.

Re: Madrid R3 : (1) S.Williams accepts Azarenka's EPIC CHOKE 7-6(5) 3-6 7-6(1) saves

Lately, when Serena plays badly (with 50+ UEs), everyone acts like the matches are for the ages, and now are even going so far as to say that these matches are rivalries.

This is pathetic.
