Re: Do Madrid & Beijing seem any different from the Premier 5 tournaments?

It's all about the money. Madrid and Beijing were willing to pay way more $$$$$ than the other Premier events but wanted something in return. The result is the Premier Mandatory / Premier mess.

Chris never played him. It was Margaret Court who did and lost badly. The match was called the "Mother's Day Massacre."

Re: Katrina Adams is the new President of the USTA

Congratulations to Katrina! I wonder if her old friend and doubles partner Zina would have mixed feelings about this considering her lawsuit a few years back.

Re: Does your city want to host a WTA tournament? Applications are open now!

I remember they used to play an exhibition in Monte Carlo before the French. Graf played Navratilova there. And a reporter asked the ATP tournament director about the possibility of adding a...

Re: Does Groundstroke production change over the course of a Career?

Interesting topic! I'm not sure how intentional it is, but yes, some players' strokes go through pretty drastic changes. Jennifer Capriati definitely beefed up her forehand in her "second" career...

Re: Jennifer Capriati coming back?

I agree that a singles comeback would be very, very tough. But if she comes back in doubles, I'd bet on her doing pretty great. Both Hingis and Mirza seem very happy playing just doubles, having...

Re: Calendar Talk: Miami on Green Clay Idea

I think it's a great idea, too, and I don't see the need to change dates for IW and Miami. As it is, even the IW finalists get four or five days off before they'd play their first matches in Miami,...

Re: Venus hits jackpot in Quebec, she can face only one top 180 player until final!

Hradecka is an interesting one. She's actually one of the hardest-hitting players I've ever seen, just too wild and error-prone. But if you just see the highlights from one of her matches, you'd...

Re: XWTA Top 25 Schedule For Rest of 2014 (i.e. What They Vulture To Qualify Singapor

I wonder where players like Serena and Maria will stay after they play Beijing and before Singapore starts. Do they fly all the way back to the US and then head right back to Asia after a few days? ...

Re: New Haven should be downgraded/taken off the calendar

I don't think the issue is with playing the week before a Slam. Almost every great player's done it at some point. Steffi played Strasbourg before Paris (pretty sure she won), Martina N always...

Re: WTA Acapulco releases awesome qualification list

Chris learned the game with a wooden racket, which isn't conducive to playing with topspin (Borg notwithstanding). Women playing with heavy topspin started to appear after graphite rackets were...

Re: XWTA 2014-2015 Calendar- Nurnberg MM 280 On Stacy's Chopping Block

Such a weird end to the season. Most players will play Beijing then go back home then go on to Singapore. Two long separate trips to Asia when players are tired and ready for vacation = Fail.

Re: Peak Graf vs Peak Henin on clay (RG)?

If you're comparing records (on any surface), of course Graf would win hands-down. But the OP is asking about their peak games on clay, and I'd have to go with Henin. She'd keep pounding away at...

Re: It's going to be a boring week without any WTA action next week

Didn't Stacey Allaster say (threaten?) that the tour will start hosting events on Fed Cup weeks? I say go for it. It's pretty ridiculous for the WTA to give up three weeks for Fed Cup play. It...

Re: Li Na set to overtake Sharapova as highest paid, according to Max Eisenbud

I do wonder what made Serena make the comment in the first place. It is common knowledge that Serena and Grigor were friends (maybe more?) at one point, and she sat in his box for his matches in...

Re: WTA Tour de Force (article)

I'm a fan of Maria, but I still don't get how Vika's game is any more one-dimensional than Maria's. And LOL at Bodo saying Li Na is serve-and-volleying more than ever before when she never does it...

Re: The Beginning of Power Tennis

Gotta mention Lindsay, who was a power player but not a brainless basher. As for Mirjana, no one would argue that she didn't hit the ball hard (after Jana N beat her at the US Open, she said she had...

Re: Turning points women's tennis history

Like another poster has already said, you obviously have to mention the formation of the WTA tour with the Original Nine players spearheaded by Billie Jean. Billie further ensured women's tennis by...

Re: YEC: Why NOT Inlcude a 3rd Place Match On Final Day

They used to have some third-place play-offs at some events way back in the day. Pam Shriver talked about it in her tour diary book from the 80's. According to her, "all the players" hated them,...

Re: WTA 40 Love, Players discuss Steffi's Golden Slam

It's kind of bizarre that the only player to beat Steffi that year at a really important event was... PAM SHRIVER (at the season-ending Tour Chamionships)! Pam was a solid Top 5 player, but it...

Re: Packed stadium in Beijing...

About the smog, they should make this event (and the rest of the Asian swing) indoors. It's a much more logical build-up to the Tour Champshionship, and people don't have to worry about the smog...

Re: Would the Grand Slam ask women to play best of 5?

There's actually historical precedence for this. WAY back in the day (think around 1900), the women DID play best of 5 matches at the US Open (not sure if it was every match or just the final). And...

Re: Any news on the 2015 calendar??

Sure, before it got moved to its new ridiculous date right after the Australian Open. Big chunks of the schedule are just a hot mess right now. A major problem is that so many events have become...
