Stanning for (Agni) Stefanou
I feel like Agni should have a thread. From Athens, she's 24 years old so she may not seem that young, but she stopped playing tennis for a few years and then returned when she was 21 and gradually has gotten her ranking up again. She played once for the Fed Cup team, in 2012 Europe/Africa Zone Group I. She didn't start off 2013 in the best way and had some tough draws and then had an amazing June-July-August-September period and then struggled with injuries afterwards . She has a younger sister who used to play named Katerina (nicknamed Kaiti). Her best friend is Maria Sakkari but she is also close with the other Greek girls :)

Her career-high of 689 was achieved in October, and she's currently ranked 741. Not only is she currently our sixth-highest ranked player, but she's also one of our prettiest players :hearts:

Re: Stanning for (Agni) Stefanou
I made a little mistake when I said she was from Athens in the opening post. She is from Athens and lives and trains there but her parents are from the island of Syros (the capital of the Cyclades chain which includes the famous Mykonos and Santorini as well as many others). She spends her summers there and trains at a club there when she is not playing in tournaments so I guess it's her "second home" :p.

These are some photos from a photoshoot/interview back in March 2012:

Here is a link to the interview:αγνη-στεφανου/

It's a short interview but to summarize it, basically the interview was for a website about women's running/fitness in Greece so she talked about that kind of stuff. She spoke about how she runs a lot to stay in shape. She said she prefers to run outdoors instead of on a treadmill. She talked about watching her diet and also about stretching. She said that she doesn't go a day without training because it sets her back. She said that it gets on her nerves when she's at the gym and there are a lot of other people there who focus more on gossip than conditioning

Re: Stanning for (Agni) Stefanou
At the last minute, Agni was called up to play Fed Cup for Greece. Her only other time playing Fed Cup was in 2012 where she was 0-3 overall. Her only singles match was in the relegation play-off against Luxembourg. She injured her shoulder while leading Claudine Schaul (former top 50 player) 4-0 in the first set and ended up losing the match (Greece lost the tie 7-6(8) in the third of deciding doubles), so hopefully this time she can be healthy and have a better experience :)

Today in Greece's 3-0 win over Cyprus, she played a dead doubles rubber with Valentini Grammatikopoulou, and they won 6-2 6-4 over Patsali and Tsaggaridou :yeah:. Obviously the scoreline is not very convincing but I'll give Agni the benefit of the doubt since she is coming back from injury and it was a dead rubber anyways . It's good that she got her first Fed Cup win, very important for her. It was just a dead rubber but a win in a live rubber will come soon hopefully :)

Next tie is against Moldova on Friday ;)

It was a dead rubber so they probably didn't care ;)

Re: Stanning for (Agni) Stefanou
6-3 3-6 5-7 against Frech :bigcry:
Disappointing loss but she was still very close, and Frech is a young rising player. *Too bad she couldn't reach QF. There's always next week I guess ;)

Re: Stanning for (Agni) Stefanou
4-6 2-6
Smith ended up winning the title without dropping more than 6 games in a match, so that's a good sign despite the loss ;)

Following week in Heraklion:
R1 l. to Anastasiya Saitova RUS (#660) 0-6 6-7 :(
4/15 on break points :help:

Last week in Heraklion:
R1 l. to Catherine Chantraine BEL (#956) 3-6 6-2 1-6
4/12 on break points won't get it done
