Gioia Barbieri
No thread for Gioia? :p
Born in 1991 in Cervia, Gioia was always a good prospect. Injury have complicated her career a lot, and she has a chronical back problem for which she can't play on fast courts for more than a few tournaments per year. Don't honestly know if things changed a bit now.
She is very aggressive. Her backhand is a pearl, she makes tons of winners with that. Her biggest opponents is probably herself.
Good luck Gioia. :cheer:

Gioia Barbieri vs. Dalila Jakupovic match report
$25,000 Lagos

Barbieri stunned by near-perfect DalilaÖ

Gioia Barbieri has won a lot of admirers in her short stay in Lagos, majorly because of her unmistakable intensity on the tennis court. Be it on the practice courts or during actual matches, Gioia smacks that forehand with similar gusto, backed up by the now customary grunt. Having seen off the wily Nina Bratchikova in the second round, she perhaps went into her quarter final against Dalila Jakupovic as slight favourite.

Jakupovic had progressed through the draw almost unnoticed, but she shot into everyoneís consciousness with one of the performances of the tournament so far on Thursday afternoon.

Barbieriís forehand had been one of the highlights of the Governorís Cup, but Jakupovic has got the steadier backhand- and crucially, she moves and defends better. Most impressive was the way Dalila negated Barbieriís fierce forehand by forcing the Italian wide with wicked short angles, and going down-the-line without hesitation. Placement over power- Smart.

Jakupovic saw an early 4-1 lead evaporate over the heat of a Barbieri fight-back, but the Slovenian stepped it up again to hold for 5-4, before making another move on the Barbieri serve. The Italian cracked under pressure, spraying a couple of forehands long and wide before giving up the set 6-4.

The Barbieri forehand continued to misfire early in the second set, and that helped Japukovic to an early break of serve, but despite another Italian resurgence, the Slovenian found the greater consistency- both physically and mentally- to close out a fine 6-4 6-2 win. Sheís a very good player, Jakupovic, and sheíll be very tough to beat.

Re: Gioia Barbieri
Cool report. :yeah: Gioia had defeated Jakupovic a few days ago in practice: adding this to her good win against Bratchikova in the round before, she maybe got on court thinking she was a bigger favourite for the win.
She is playing in Lagos this week, too.

1st round: Gioia def. Frlicka 6-0 6-1. :hatoff:

Re: Gioia Barbieri
Just checked Jakupovic's results this year, and she has progressed a lot. It won't be easy. Nice win against Simmonds, though.
Still, in the worst case, Gioia goes out of Lagos with 28 points, which help her ranking a lot. :yeah:

Re: Gioia Barbieri
Since she started working at San Marino Tennis' Academy with Galimberti, she has won 20 of 23 matches. :worship:
Gioia's schedule should be Lagos - Taipei - Dubai - Toyota. Glad she is finally getting money help, too. I think her staff wants her to make Australian Open, which would be a miracle considering the injury in the middle of the season.
Next (probably) Majeric.

So easy. :bolt: Gioia.
Final against servebot Broady or journeywoman Bratchikova (already defeated by Gioia last week). If she stays calm she has a serious shot to win the thole thing! Impressive week!

1R: Gioia Barbieri (ITA) d. (3)Luksika Kumkhum (THA) 64 64
2R: Gioia Barbieri (ITA) d. Ya-Hsuan Lee (TPE) 62 61
QF: Gioia Barbieri (ITA) d. Yung-Jan Chan (TPE) 36 64 40 Ret.
SF: Paula Kania (POL) d. Gioia Barbieri (ITA) 64 63

Another strong effort from Gioia, no shame in losing to the eventual champion. She appears to have withdrawn from Dubai, but she's still on the Toyota entry list albeit as an alternate for qualifying.
