putin is bat#### crazy-could affect olympics

should Maria stay out of it? is there anything any athlete, especially from russia, could do or say that would matter?

just six months before Russia hosts the 2014 Winter Games, Mr. Putin signed a law allowing police officers to arrest tourists and foreign nationals they suspect of being homosexual, lesbian or “pro-gay” and detain them for up to 14 days. Contrary to what the International Olympic Committee says, the law could mean that any Olympic athlete, trainer, reporter, family member or fan who is gay — or suspected of being gay, or just accused of being gay — can go to jail.

Earlier in June, Mr. Putin signed yet another antigay bill, classifying “homosexual propaganda” as pornography. The law is broad and vague, so that any teacher who tells students that homosexuality is not evil, any parents who tell their child that homosexuality is normal, or anyone who makes pro-gay statements deemed accessible to someone underage is now subject to arrest and fines. Even a judge, lawyer or lawmaker cannot publicly argue for tolerance without the threat of punishment.

Finally, it is rumored that Mr. Putin is about to sign an edict that would remove children from their own families if the parents are either gay or lesbian or suspected of being gay or lesbian. The police would have the authority to remove children from adoptive homes as well as from their own biological parents.

I've always wanted to get married in Russia, I have a feeling that's not going to happen...
I would be kicked out of Russia in a second.

but it's not like Maria shows any "homosexually propaganda" so she has nothing to worry about

scared of me, or scared of putin? I cannot think of anything an athlete could say....but I do think that saying nothing is very close to saying something. "this is shocking, but not shocking enough for me to make any comment. surely navritilova will speak up.

maria is a thoughtful, articulate woman. I cannot imagine that she is unaware of these reports, and not distessed about them. she loves russia. what should someone from russia do?

I would hope and think Maria is ashamed of what is happening in Russia right now. It's just horrible and unbelievable

I can't see her saying anything, but it would make me delighted if she did.

Look at Kuznetsova, she's gay but says homophobic things. I'm guessing it's because she's scared. Yes I know she's not out yet, but it's pretty clear.

She's not going to say anything. She doesn't do public political statements, of any kind  She said when she was asked about the whole Serena/rape thing that she follows the news quite closely but makes a point of never discussing her views with the media.

I do not think this is ordinary news. And with all the players, coaches, assistants, fans, and media....the impact could be felt directly by some of them. and in the photoshoot business...

It might not be ordinary news, but that doesn't mean she's going to say something. Not even if she didn't play for Russia.

Maybe the press will ask her a question about it and she'll give a very politically correct pre arranged answer, but that's it.

Maria has been so much looking forward to Sochi ever since they won the bid and I don't think any comments or threats against any group will keep her from proudly representing her country and being there in person. She altered her schedule just for this event. Putin may be the leader but he doesn't speak for all of Russia and if Maria wanted to weigh in on this, I think she would without concern.

If she did decide to voice her disapproval of Russia's attitude towards gays, as powerful and famous as Maria is, Putin wouldn't dare do anything to condemn her, unless he wants an even worse PR nightmare dropped on his head.

It's hard to say if this story will lead to any significant impact. I know there were human rights groups speaking out about boycotts of Beijing because of China's policies, but nothing really came of it and the Olympics were a big success. At this point, I'm probably still more concerned about the potential of Chechen militants disrupting things.

why is she supposed to make any definitive statements anyway? Let russian authorities and political powers deal with their own crap without dragging athletes into it.

I appreciate your post....it gives me a clearer perspective. There are those who point out that this is mainly a distraction for the people, because he is screwing up a lot of other things. I can see the logic of Maria staying out of this.....I believe the retired players in the media are in a better position to say what things need to be said.

I do not rule out the possibility that sometime in Maria's life, she will be a significant voice regarding things not related to tennis. She is a very smart woman.

Maria won't say a word, unfortunately.
As Mexicola pointed out, she's been waiting for that event for years now.
Maria is building a business empire and she needs to sell her products in countries which are predominantly homophobic (Russia included).
She will turn a blind eye to this matter and if she gets asked she will give an IMG prepped response.
Olympic Games are a great opportunity for advertising and she will milk it as much as possible.

I would love her to speak out, but it's probably not gonna happen.
Do not expect her to be an advocate for what's right.
