Whybourn with a MD WC? Surely the AELTC will be looking at her results and think again?

She reached the final of Phuket.
I think so long as she is top 250 she will get one and wins a match in either Nottingham she will get one.

Her Wimbledon qualies results are pretty good. Beaten Peers, Floris and Gronert and took Karatantcheva to 3.

I know she did, but she struggled her way into the final against weak opponents. She should be a waste of a WC and would be better off in the QD.

Whens the cut off for Whybourn and Murray to get top 250?...

Re: Entry list

Thanks Spiceboy, I totally agree with your assessment of the ludicrous Ying-Ying Duan, let's hope she draws Serena!!!! That would be the funniest thing on Centre Court since Conchita and Gigi sangalong with Cliff Richard! It could be the most hapless mismatch since Stefan Edberg triple bagelled his countryman Stefan Eriksson one year!

Seriously, whichever committee it is which decides how ranking points are structured should hold an enquiry into how such a dud player can get into a grand slam main draw by ranking. She is the classic example of a player who racks up points by rarely losing in first rounds and by playing duff events in Asia, a sort of poor woman's Su-Wei Hsieh.

I don't think anyone can complain about Lisa Whybourn getting a wild card if this player can get into the main draw, at least Whybourn has won some matches in Europe and on grass in the UK even.

I hope the LTA are lenient and let both Murray and Whybourn in, even if they are just outside the top 250; Whybourn is currently 255 in the world.

Obviously Konta, Baltacha, Keothavong, Moore will get WCs; there will be no junior winner WC as Bouchard is main draw acceptance; other WCs are usually offered to a player who reaches last 16 or better of Roland Garros (eg Carla Suarez Navarro) or a player who does well in the grass season, well usually Birmingham (Lisicki, Oudin). If they run out of ideas, some years they even give it to the 'next in' player, so Martic or Glatch could make it in that way if there are not enough withdrawals to let them in anyway.

QWCs - a very threadbare mob. Gibraltarian Amanda Carreras has never played Wimbledon qualies, and never seems to play in Britain either, preferring European clay, so it will be interesting to see if she finally makes it to Roehampton, given that she is one of the highest-ranked candidates for a QWC. I am sure that Broady and the improving Windley will get one, but then the choice diminishes between two declining not exactly spring chickens (South and Webley-Smith) and a slew of satellite level players who really have no business in a slam, who I suppose will be entered in a play-off.

Another thing I have noticed - the WTA seem to have dumped 'Great Britain' for 'United Kingdom' when giving the rankings of the British players, interesting...but then by 2015 Wimbledon, that might not even exist either! ;)

LadyBugLove May 17th, 2013 10:31 PM

Who in the Main Draw is at risk of not playing due to injury or other reasons?

I think you are being too hard on Duan. She actually defeated some decent players and has been consistently good in the events she has played. Just because she chooses not to play ITF events in Europe doesn't mean that she shouldn't be ranked in the Top 200. I agree that the points earned in these Asian events don't reflect the quality of the field, relative to these events in Europe and the US, but a) that is nothing new (think of someone like Namigata getting direct entry into Slams not too long ago); b) not Duan's fault; c) ultimately good for the breadth of the tour as it promotes tennis in different countries. But, yes, she should be easy prey.

Whybourn actually built her ranking on ITF events in Asia as well, except a) these events are even weaker than the ones Duan played and b) she frankly sucks most of the time. She has had pretty good results for her standard on grass, but they have all been against players of Challenger caliber and who are inexperienced on grass (someone like Giorgi). She seems like a lovely girl but has absolutely no business being in the MD.

Would be hilarious if we got a Whybourn - Duan first-round match-up :lick:
