When was Claypova born?

When did it all start?

2011 Rome most probably (some would even claim 2010 RG R3 match vs Henin, although she somehow blew it)

For me, it was when Maria defeated Caroline at Rome 2011, finally notching a win after all the humiliating defeats she suffered against that girl. At RG 2010, I was just in disbelief that Maria won a set against Justine, but I'm sure there were signs of it then as well. Although today she is so much more fit and a lot more confident in her abilities to grind out tough points on this surface, helped by her monumental defensive improvements. Her defensive backhands on clay are some of my favorite shots :hearts:

Yeah, I would say Rome as well. It was not just the birth of claypova but the official start of Sharapova part II in general.

Actually, this :) (Pova herself said that this match inspired her to improve her clay game) I don't remember the exact quote, though

Praise Henin :worship: Debby should be proud

Yeah she said the match against Christine Henin helped a lot.

When Maria won that point with a dropshot against Henin, I was like: The comeback has already worth it! I couldnt have high expectations back then.

Rome 2011 was her biggest title since 2008 and she showed her improvement in the department of consistencies. Movement back then wasn't great and her serve didn't have great pace and placement either basically to ensure they were in. I'd say the SF run in RG 2011 was the point when she knew she had to alter something to win on that surface because she lacked movement despite her great ability to strike the balls well.

The Henin match without a doubt. After getting blown out in the first set, she adjusted her tactics, came forward more, worked the angles, and added spin. From then on she looked like a different player on clay to me.

Her victory in Rome in 2011 was the first time I started to take her seriously as someone who had the potential to be successful on clay. After years of all that "cow on ice" stuff, this title was a huge step for her. And then she followed it up with a semifinal run at the French, so the Claypova pieces were falling into place.

FakeFan

She said that after losing to Henin in three tough sets, she realized she wasn't that far on clay from someone who had so much success on it so it kinda motivated her to do better cause she knew she could be better.

Don't forget she reached the Semis at RG 2007, losing to eventual champion Ana.....

This.

Losing that match the way she did is one of the best things that ever happened to her. The difference between the first and second sets made us all think the cow had a plan, and after that match developed the skills to implement a clay plan.

Any previous success she had on clay was just down to being a better tennis player than most of the people she had come across.
