2012 - One of the Best Quality Years for WTA
This year there were 3 players that reached at least 2 major finals.
The first time since 2003 (when tennis was at its arguable peak) 2012 - S. Williams (2/2), V. Azarenka (1/2), M. Sharapova (1/2) 2011 - N. Li (1/2) 2010 - S. Williams (2/2), V. Zvonareva (0/2) 2009 - S. Williams (2/2), D. Safina (0/2) 2008 - S. Williams (1/2), A. Ivanovic (1/2) 2007 - J. Henin (2/2) 2006 - A. Mauresmo (2/2), J. Henin (1/4) 2005 - L. Davenport (0/2), M. Pierce (0/2) 2004 - E. Dementieva (0/2) 2003 - S. Williams (2/2), J. Henin (2/2), V. Williams (0/2), K. Clijsters (0/2) 2002 - S. Williams (3/3), V. Williams (0/3) 2001 - V. Williams (2/2), J. Capriati (2/2) 2000 - V. Williams (2/2), L. Davenport (1/3) ----------- It's interesting that even in years with questionable quality in majors that at least 1 person has made +1 GS final going back at least to 2000 (and I'm sure waaaaaaaaay past then). |

J Henin should be 1/4 for 2006 ;)
oh and Davenport was 1/3 in 2000 She won Aussie preventing Hingis from a 4th straight title |

Re: 2012 - One of the Best Quality Years for WTA
though a lot of people will argue the golden days of womens tennis is over, i personally think 2012 has been an exceptional year for the tour in consideration of vika's first slam + spring dominance, masha's career slam and clay dominance, rena's wimbledon post 30 - the olympics - the us open going to three sets and being competitive  and each person ascending to no.1 by right of winning a grand slam (except rena :tape:)
plus rena played near enough a full schedule, and li qualified for YEC. Plus kerbers match wins and errani's consistency in the slams have put the right 8 players in the YEC. biggest disappointment this year has to be Petra (apart from her phoenix from the ashes US HC goat form) |

It really has been a great year, the 'bold prediction: 2012 won't be a mess' thread needs to be bumped too.

Re: 2012 - One of the Best Quality Years for WTA
Agree that 2012 was great year so far and hope it ends well - already Beijing last big event before YEC will have Sharapova in F+Vika most likely too - No.1vs No.2 in ranking - thatīs another proof of quality and consistency of top girls.
I think top 3 girls this season had all great seasons - Serena winning 2 slams + gold + another titles on clay - Vika dominating 1st part of season and being consistent for rest of the season reaching F,SF all the time Maria - comeback to No.1, won last missing slam + very consistent similar to Vika playing F, SF at big events whole season even Radwanska if ends up 4th will have great year. Only dissapoitment so far for me is Kvitova i was hoping 2012 would be here year. |

.... what? :lol:A great year is not defined by who reaches major finals. What a load of crap, sorry.

I agree. The top players are meeting more frequently deep in the draw and not losing to random mugs

Re: 2012 - One of the Best Quality Years for WTA
Definitely, I've liked this year much more then last year and the year before.
Haven't been a avid tennis fan before 2010 so I wouldn't have a clue :help: |
Re: 2012 - One of the Best Quality Years for WTA
Its been good quality-wise, but the best thing is that we are finally getting some rivalries going!

Re: 2012 - One of the Best Quality Years for WTA
tbh thinking back has there been any real legendary matches to this year? The only match I can truly remember was sharapova getting ran over in the olympics.
