Curse of Indian Wells
 

I have heard of this curse outside of tennisforum but no one seems to have mentioned it on here? The curse is with regard to the champion of the tournament

Is it like the Shakespeare play that you shouldnt say the name of?

Here is the curse and how it has manifested itself.

2012- Vika wins IW as part of a 26 win run to kick off the year. She has not won a tournament since.
2011- Caro wins IW coming off her best run of form (winning 5 P5/PMs in a row, US and Oz SF, YEC Final). Basically has been almost downhill ever since (With no premier 5 or mandatory, GS finals or better since and falling out of the top ten).
2010- JJ wins. Despite a good follow on season since she hasnt won a title since (in almost 3 years!!!). Fallen out of the top 20 (and even out of the top 30)
2009- Vera wins. Injures ankle and takes more than a year to really recover (falling out of the top 20 in the process).
2008- Ana wins. Wins upcoming FO but then thats about it (no need to run through the many downs again!)
2007- Daniela wins. Unfulfilled career :sad:
2006- Maria wins. Not too sure about curse this time although future serious injury problems?
2005- Kim wins. Not too sure about curse this time although career plagued with injury?
2004- Justine wins then gets Mono
2003- Kim wins then loses to Justine in the next few slam finals (and injury plagued career).
2002- Daniela wins. Unfulfilled career :sad:

Davenport won in 2000 and never won a slam again, and at the end of 2001 got a serious knee injury :sad:

In 2001 Serena won and 2 years later she has a severe knee injury that kept her out of the game for almost a year :eek:

Yeah Vika has been truly cursed with an Olympic gold and bronze medal, a Slam final, a Slam semifinal and a likely YE #1. You might as well call her curse Serena. :lol:

I call bullshit on this one.

Some of the reasons in there are cop-outs (future injury problems etc.) and listing Vika is a joke as well. She has since then recaptured the #1 ranking, won a gold & bronze medal, a slam SF & F and has a comfortable lead in the ranking.

Caro was cursed by something else but it sure as hell isn't IW.

Im not making this up on the spot. Something that people i know, who dont use the forum, consider as tennis superstition (and which i have heard no one on these boards mention).

Wonder if its something that has been mentioned on British Eurosport sometime over the years

You can call it a curse, but it just looks like a curse because you think IW winners are better than they are. So many mugs have won IW because they are doing their best to win at least there as they can't win a slam. But real slam contenders don't care about the MM of IW, it's easier to beat them in a MM than at a slam.

You can also say Tokyo's Toray Pan Pacific Open had a curse. '98 champion Davenport was the latest player title to win a slam after Tokyo title until this year when '09 champion Sharapova won RG. Those curses are just because mugs have a better chance to win a Tier I/PM/P5.

Your attempt seems contrived (on one hand - for some players - you're focusing on short term temporary issues - on the other hand for other players you're randomly focusing on their entire career after winning IW).

Two can play that game on almost any tournament.

For example Miami:

-2002-2004, 2007-2008 winner Serena = loses a sister in a random shootout, mysteriously steps on a broken glass and gets injured
-2005 winner Kim = is the same as that year's IW winner so she was already cursed according to you
-2006 winner Kuzzy = her career is in the toilet (much worse than Dani's)
-2009 winner Vika = didnt' win any thing else (just like 2012)
-2010 winner Kim = lost to the world no. 258 at the start of the clay season (the rest of the clay season is dumped after that)
-2011 winner Vika = starts fainting multiples of times that year
-2012 winner Aga = loses Tokyo/Beijing and is injured
