The Race to the Roland Garros MDWC 2013 Edition - Shelby wins 2013 WC!

Kevin and Meelis have informed me that their will be no play-off this year for the Wild Card. Instead, there will be a race based off whoever has the best 2 results from the 3 50K American green clay events; Dothan, Charlottesville, and Indian Beach Harbor.

Past winners of the RG MDWC were Ahsha Rolle, Jamie Hampton, Madison Brengle, Lauren Embree, Christina McHale, and Irina Falconi.

2012 was first year of the race to the WC and Melanie Oudin won it.

Re: The Race to the Roland Garros MDWC

Rules
-Wild Card will go to the American with the highest cumulative singles MAIN DRAW WTA ranking points from the 3 consecutive 50K events.
-Player's best 2 results will be used and combined for the cumulative total.
-If there is a tie, whoever has the higher WTA ranking on May 6, 2013 will get the WC.
-Players must compete in at least 1 of the 3 events to be considered for the WC. (Duh)
-If the American with the highest amount of cumulative points from the 3 events becomes a Direct Entrant by the time of Roland Garros, then the American in 2nd place will get the WC.
-This Wild Card can be won by any American, no matter the ranking so long as would be able to represent Team USA in Fed Cup in 2013 and are USA passport holders. Also, need to be the age of 14 and higher.

more past winners include Madison Brengle, Jamie Hampton and I think Ahsha Rolle. But Brengle was the first to get a MDWC. Hampton and Rolle got QWC.

This is a very interesting new way of handling the US French WC. I think this is a smart way of making the US Challenger's more relevant during the spring swing of the tour. I'm anxious to see how it all works out. :bounce:

I think after Embree winning the playoff (which was a mess to begin with), that this can be a much better option and could be very entertaining.

Thanks so much for doing this!! :D

I like the idea too, of having to perform well in two different tournaments to earn your way. It should get interesting.

Also, with Falconi's ranking, she should be in the MD of the French already though, right?

Re: The Race to the Roland Garros MDWC - Dothan R2 complete! - Jill vs. Lauren vs. Ju

This is a good method I think for the French Open WC. That playoff was never as legit as the one for the Australian.

Thanks for keeping track of points, Uranium!

I think they could do 50k Grapevine and 75k Phoenix as tournaments for an AO playoff IMO.

I actually think the AO playoff works. Most of the players take a good month off before it to train, recharge, and get fresh. It gives them a chance to start new and go out with a clean slate with a big prize up for grabs. Plus it is well covered, especially this year with a decent livestream. My only beef with the event is there should be some sort of criteria with how the girls are invited, or maybe the field expanded to a 16 person draw? Or 12 with top 4 seeds getting byes in R1?
