- Misdiagnosed shoulder injury lead to a tear, forcing Maria to undergo shoulder surgery and out of the game

- Widely deemed as the worst year of her career in both results and form.

- At the beginning of the year, Maria made a career changing decision to break off coaching relationship with

long-term coach Michael Joyce and hired Thomas Hogstedt.

- She returned to the top 10 for the first time since the beginning of 2009 after Indian Wells.

- She managed to climb to as high as world no. 2, the highest position she's been at since mid-2008.

- Under Hogstedt's guidance, Maria's game changed significantly - her return of serve became widely known as

the greatest on the tour alongside Victoria Azarenka. Her defense also saw great improvement.

- Maria topped the stats for return games won and percentage of break points converted for the first time in

her career.
