Petra Kvitova honored as “Czech Athlete of the Year” Thursday, December 22nd, 2011 at 9:32 am 011 Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova has been honored as “Czech athlete of the year” in a poll of sports journalists. It’s a memorable year for the Czech Republic player because she won six singles titles this year. Recently, the 21-year-old tennis star has been named “WTA Player of the Year” and “ITF Women’s World Champion.” Kvitova won the 2011 WTA Tour Championships in Istanbul by defeating top-class players like Vera Zvonareva, Wolrd No.1 Caroline Wozniacki, Agnieszka Radwańska, Samantha Stosur and Victoria Azarenka. She reached to No.2 in the WTA rankings after the 7–5, 4–6, 6–3 victory over Azarenka in the WTA Championships final. She also played a major role in winning the Fed Cup to Czech Republic for the first time and this team was named as “Team of the Year.” The cross-country race winner at the Mountain Bike World Championships at Champery, Switzerland, in September, Jaroslav Kulhavy stood behind Kvitova and world speedskating champion Martina Sablikova got the third place in the poll. Petra won her second career title at the Brisbane International in early 2011. Later, she entered the 2011 Australian Open as 25th seed and thrashed out by World No. 2 Vera Zvonareva in the quarter-finals but reached World No.18. She won her second title of the year in Paris by defeating 2011 Australian Open champion Kim Clijsters in the finals and improved her rank to World No.14. She started 2011 at World No.34 and climbed to World No.28 after victory in Brisbane International final. She clinched the title at the 2011 Mutua Madrid Open and made her top-10 debut after the tournament at World No. 10. After the 2011 Internazionali BNL d’Italia, she moved to World No.9. She entered the 2011 French Open as the ninth seed but overwhelmed by champion Li Na in the fourth round. In July, she won her first Grand Slam title 2011 Wimbledon Championships, where she was eighth seed. In the following Grand Slam tournament 2011 US Open, she lost to Alexandra Dulgheru in the first round with out winning a set. She climbed to World No. 5 after 2011 Toray Pan Pacific Open. She won her fifth title of the year at the 2011 Generali Ladies Linz. Her sixth title of the year is “2011 WTA Tour Championships.” |

Kulhavy (in 2011 only) won World Cup, EU Champ, World Champ, 5 WC races, UCI 1st ranking in MTB, 2nd in WCH / marathon - and it was still "not enough". Sablikova (speedskating) also won almost anything she has entered, including Rep Champ time trial on road bike. There is a lot of other great athletes in CZ (for example Spotakova - javelin - is injury-free and has form for new world record) - we will see, ask again in November ;) |

The problem with other athletes is that they compete in obscure sport disciplines. Football is much bigger than mountain biking, speed skating and javelin combined... As you say, we'll see in November. Petra, you can do it, defend that freaking Wimbledon title :rocker2: |
Re: Czech Athlete of the Year
Petra is not even in the TOP10 this year and finished in the 14th place.

Basically olympic gold and silver medalists plus Jagr, Petr Čech and Berdych. The irony: Tomas's best slam results: QF and SF, while Petra made two SFs and made QF both at Wimbledon and Olympics, while Berdych bombed out in the first round at both events  http://sport.idnes.cz/nominace-anket...717_sporty_ber |
