Re: Updates
Kristie Ahn has been very public in articles that she plans to go to college while playing other events each summer.
Anyone with an WTA above 500 is clueless if they think they have pro option... GET A DEGREE and develop your skills. Ask Jane Chi how that works... she is the poster child for 'smart' and using college tennis to develop. |
Re: 2010-2011 recruiting - high interest
Unfortunately the negative stereotype in tennis is if you don't turn pro by 18 you're a has been. Another negative stereotype is the only ones who play college tennis are those that won't or couldn't make it in the pros.
The USTA promotes these negative stereotypes by not helping elite college players develop their pro potential and passing over college players when awarding wild card entries into their events. The USTA is not looking for the next Jane Chi or solid pro but the next Williams sisters or future grand slam winners, which means allocating most funds developing the teens that have "potential" to turn pro by age 16. Until a woman who played college tennis makes the WTA top 20 these stereotypes will persist. It doesn't help when a 2-time NCAA champion like Amber Liu has never broken into the WTA top 200. The flipside is playing college tennis is a great experience & gets you a degree. On the other hand playing a full pro schedule costs about $50,000 a year in travel expenses. That can double if you bring your coach along. So unless you win more in prize money than your yearly expenses cost,... as a pro your family which usually pay the bills will end up in debt and the player without a degree. This is the fate for the majority of those who turn pro. |
