Marion, FFT and Fedcup

Quote:

George Goven said that Walter said Marion was too tired to play Fed cup and Goven accepted that and said he wouldn't be a good coach if he selected her anyway and that there is still the possibilty she will play the olympics.

then Tati said: If find that it's said she's not coming. These are always the excuses from her father...thats ok, it's a week out of the year. It's an honour to be there. To not come, thats said and dissapoinging., she doesn't give us a good image. When she goes on the TV and she starts to say that Russia beat us because she couldn't see her father in the stands. You are a tennis player, you can't manage yourseld alone on the court? I find that ridiculous. Whats more, we're not alone, we have a super captain, a super coach, super team and a good staff. And when she says that the italians have won because they have their trainers, that's not true. If she doesn't want to go, that's her problem. Me I wasn't born in France and yet, I seem more french that she is.

Mauresmo: she must conform to the rules of the group.

It's out of the question to make an exception for Marion. Goven says that he won't integrate Marion into the team on her conditions. " They have to be a group, no individuality. If Marion wants to play she is welcome but it has to be with the conditions of the team. I say what the other members of the team thing." Mauresmo basically says the same thing...

Dechy: If we let Marion do that, there will be othe players who'll come with other systems, and another and another and in the end, there won't be a team. From teh moment one makes an exception, the team doesn't work anymore. And also, when I hear talk (by Marion) of fatigue, I don't agree with that. We are all tired, we all have schedules, we all have played a large number of matches when we arrive at fed cup, the change of surface is there for all players. the weeks of fed cup aren't easy to put in the program already busy. When we are a finalist at a grand slam, if we are not injured, it's an honour and a thing you must do to represent your team and your country and go fight for a place in the final. I find it a shame that Marion didn't come. I think that the results that the men have had in the davis cup and the women in the fed cup are born in the spirit of the group. It's the same in footbal or rugby, it's that that changes between the tournaments and fed cup. playing fed cup, it's harder that playng a tournament. One must have the team behind you, that's what makes the strenth of the team.
Fed cup team v. Bartoli round 234434:

For those people who haven't followed Marion's career for very long, this has been an on going saga. Basically Marion want's to play fed cup but still wants to train/be coached by her father rather than Goven (I believe) and those are against the rules.

Walter told Goven that Marion was too tired to play this year (hence Dechy's comments) and that is why she is not playing this year...

That's my translation of an article in French that was posted by Tati fan's in the GM...a little bit harsh from the girls imo..what do you think?

Yes probably a bit harsh and Tati didn't hold back.

But thinking about it from their point of view I would say that have a reason to say those things. They have a system that works as you can see from the French results so why go changing it for one player.

So then basically it all comes down to: can Marion adapt to play in the Fed Cup without her father.

Re: Marion, FFT and Fedcup

did you read that new article that nouf posted?

the full quote from Tati is a lot harsher than the abbreviated version in the other one! She basically says that Marion's 'excuse' of not wanting to leave her father is crap :o

I'm really fed up with the press making huge problems out of nothing and with polemics in general.
Tati. :tape:

I'm a bit torn in this. If Marion really really wants her father (maybe more as a father than as a coach btw) since it's obvious she really has a particular relationship with him but if he doesn't get involved in her coaching and the group's during the tie, why not? An agreement is possible!

I mean too bad about the girl's harsh quotes because the "problem" was easily manageable before that... Now there must be some hurt ego to deal with.

If Marion wasn't playing as well as she had the last 6 months, they wouldn't have cared and just picked the highest ranked players.
Now she is playing well so they have to consider trying to break a set rule -just for her benefit.

I think the answer is they're both right, so that's why it's so difficult to solve(!)

I think Marion should have played without her father and the the other french players should have not said anything. Its a hard situation. I hope Marion will play fed cup again.

As a Tati fan and a Marion fan I don't know what to do...so I'm not taking sides on this one. I just wish the people in GM would leave Tati alone because her die hard fans are taking it badly :(

Re: Marion, FFT and Fedcup

What happened when Marion played in 2004? Was Walter there?

It would be good if Marion could play without her father there, but she doesn't want to and it's her decision. Golovin and Dechy have no business at all interfering. Look at Sharapova; she doesn't play Fed Cup.

Also the France's team are only interested in Marion because she has been playing well recently. They wouldn't care at all if she was playing badly. That is not the sort of attitude the team should have.

Hmmm that article is a little harsh and i really like Tati but she was a bit out of line in some of the things she said!!!

As a fairly recent convert to Marionism  i'm maybe not in the best position to fully comment... But that wont stop me! My instincts are to defend Marion.

A few observations.

Marion is an individualist. She has her own unique idiosyncratic but effective game. It works for her. When she's ON, she can beat anyone. Marion and her father have not so much been criticised, but CASTIGATED, for doing it their own way. Yet in the end, Marion and Walter Bartoli have the last word.. Wimbledon Final.

Maybe part of the reason why Richard Williams and Walter Bartoli are friendly, is that they know what it's like to be outsiders among the tennis literati. Maybe, just a thought.

Being an individualist, Marion has always made it clear, that her first loyalty is to herself, and her honor to her dad, (Not her country). Marion and Walter have made a lot of sacrifices, and did a lot of work to get this far. I'm sure Marion loves her country. However It wasnt the nation of France that got her to a slam final, it was Marion, and her father.

Marion owes no duty to France, or the French Tennis Federation. Not least because France somewhat turned it's nose up at Marion Bartoli. Not the darling of French tennis. The preference has always been for Dechy, Golovin, Mausesmo et al.

It's disingenuous of Natalie Dechy to say that the French team cant make coaching exceptions for Bartoli. The reality is every team always make extra effort to accomodate their star players. It's like that for David Beckham in soccer. It's like that between umpire's and top seeds. Thus, It is perfectly reasonable that certain lattitude and compromise should be permitted to Marion Bartoli.

Golovin may resent it. Maybe jealous? but fact is that the runt is now a high-status player.

I'm sure Marion's game wouldnt be at it's optimal best if alien conditions were imposed up her. Surely she would feel uncomfortable.

As fans we love to see the swoosh swoosh swooshing at the invisible dragon, like St. George! The bunny-hop and jump. The gun-cock serve.. things that no other players do. Things that make her game fascinating to watch. Marionisms!

Marion is 22 not 12. She knows what's best. It's her prerogative to make choices about how to play, and which competitions to play in.

To Ms. Golovin I say this.. Marion keeps cats. She doesnt run with a pack of dogs.. Marion is an individualist. Not a collectivist.

and also round 61841 of marion vs. the press.

if marion isn't willing to follow the rules, then fine. she won't play. that should be the end of it. i think golovin is out of line with her comments because she can't be sure that she knows marion's reasoning for not participating.

It does indeed some of those comments Tati said were actually quite personnel, and there was no need to go there! :o
