As I have said many times before, I dont buy all these lists, different magazines have different order. As far as AP is concerned, Steffi was named the greatest player of the last century, when they made of list of TENNIS players, where all the voters were former tennis players and/or Tennis experts. So they can make many other lists, with different criterias, but Steffi was their greatest tennis player of the last century. PERIOD!

The "Babe" won Gold medals in the 32 Olympics in the 80 meter hurdles, Javelin, and a silver medal in high jump. Later she was able to share the high jump gold. She was a great basketball player and later, a great golfer. She is considered the greatest female athlete of all time.

As she should be. I am quite sure nobody's ever gonna top her record.

Why isn't Althea Gibson bolded?

Is it me or does it feel that the AP is coming off a bit sexist?

I feel there could be a name of a female basketball player on this list.
The list has taken in consideration post 20th century achievements as well.
Pete Sampras would not be that high on the list if that wasn't the case.

Sitting in a car and driving fast does not make you an athlete.
Half of the country does that every day.
Obviously the AP is playing it safe in terms of the popular sports.

If there is a record in tennis, chances are Martina Navratilova has broken it. When she defected from Czechoslovakia to the United States in 1975, no one, not even Martina, could have envisioned that she would earn more titles than any player (woman or man) in tennis history.

She was named “Athlete of the Year” numerous times, and even “Female Athlete of the Decade” for the 80’s. In 2000, Navratilova was inducted into the International Tennis Hall Of Fame. She has been named to such millennium lists as AP's "World's Greatest Athletes of the Century", "Sports Illustrated Top 100 Athletes of the Century" and ESPN's "Top 50 Athletes of the Century."

How many girls did engage themselves in competitive sports seriously back then?
1,500 word-wide or what? Or less?

While Navratilova is widely considered the greatest women's play ever -- if not the greatest player, period -- her accomplishments go far beyond a record 167 singles titles and 18 Grand Slam singles championships. She won a ludicrous 165 doubles titles between 1974 and 1994, including 31 in Grand Slam doubles and seven in mixed doubles. (Greg Gerber ESPN)
